General Function
The Learning Center (LC) Supervisor oversees the Learning Center Program at Santa Barbara Rescue Mission within both the Women's Treatment Program (Bethel House), as well as the Emergency Homeless Shelter. This role involves conducting academic assessments, setting individualized educational goals, and providing group/individual instruction to clients in substance abuse treatment. The LC Supervisor also supports clients during their transitional phase with guidance on employment, education, certifications, and life skills.
Position Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in education, special education, or related field (or within a year of obtaining degree)
Ideal Candidate Will Have:
At least 2 years’ experience in a learning environment
Experience with adult learners and learning assessments
Knowledge of learning disabilities, interventions, and varied learning styles
Experience in developing individualized education plans and teaching basic academic skills (math, writing)
Proficient computer skills
Experience working with individuals with substance addictions
Comfortability working with homeless population
Familiarity with job search, resume writing, and interview preparation
Principal Activities
Assessment & Goal Development:
Conducts academic assessments for residents in the Womens Treatment Program and guests in the Emergency Homeless Shelter
Creates individualized learning plans aligned with educational/employment goals
Reports progress to supervisor
Program & Curriculum Development:
Recommends learning techniques and protocols
Develops curriculum and maintains a supportive learning environment
Academic Instruction:
Provides instruction in general education and computer skills
Supports residents pursuing GEDs, diplomas, degrees, or certifications
Career & Life Skills Support:
Assists with career planning, job searches, resumes, and cover letters
Supports computer training and application use
Provides life skills instruction, including budgeting and housing
Volunteer Coordination:
Orients, trains, and schedules volunteers LC tutors in coordination with Volunteer Coordinator
Community Engagement:
Organizes educational field trips and builds community partnerships
Team Collaboration:
Participates in case management meetings and maintains communication across departments

Ensures Bethel House residents and guests in the Emergency Homeless Shelter set realistic academic/career goals and have access to the resources needed to achieve them.
