Job Summary
The Controller is responsible for managing the institution's accounting operations, including the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk and ensure the accuracy of financial results. A critical part of the role includes extensive experience with the Ellucian Banner ERP system to ensure efficient financial data management within a higher education environment.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee all general accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and fixed assets.
Lead the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in compliance with GAAP and institutional policies.
Maintain a strong internal control environment and support annual audits, including coordination with external auditors.
Manage and continuously improve accounting processes and procedures to increase efficiency and effectiveness.
Provide leadership in the implementation, optimization, and use of Ellucian Banner for financial and accounting functions.
Collaborate with departments across campus to provide financial guidance and support budget management.
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and institutional financial regulations and reporting requirements.
Train and supervise accounting staff, ensuring professional development and high performance.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or Master's degree preferred.
Minimum of 5-7 years of progressively responsible accounting experience, preferably in higher education.
At least 3 years of hands-on experience with Ellucian Banner financial modules (e.g., Finance, HR/Payroll).
Strong knowledge of fund accounting, grant accounting, and financial reporting standards in a higher education context.
Demonstrated leadership and team management experience.
Proficient in Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools.
Excellent analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with system conversions or upgrades within Ellucian Banner.
Familiarity with other Ellucian systems (e.g., Argos, Cognos, or Degree Works) is a plus.
Strong change management skills and ability to work cross-functionally with IT and academic departments.
