Position Description:
The Bilingual Science (Biology & Chemistry) Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality instruction to English Learners, fostering a supportive and inclusive classroom environment, and collaborating with colleagues to ensure academic success and language acquisition. This role involves teaching Biology and Chemistry to students with varying language proficiency levels, differentiating instruction to meet diverse needs, and contributing to the development of curriculum and instructional strategies within the Science department.
Essential Functions:
Instruction and Curriculum Development: Plan and deliver engaging Biology and Chemistry lessons tailored to English Learners, utilizing research-based ELL strategies to support language acquisition and comprehension.
Differentiated Instruction: Differentiate instruction to meet language proficiency levels while ensuring rigorous science content.
Classroom Environment: Foster an inclusive classroom environment that celebrates linguistic and cultural diversity.
Assessment and Feedback: Assess student progress in both scientific understanding and language acquisition, providing constructive feedback to enhance learning.
Collaboration and Teamwork: Collaborate with EL and Science department teams to align instruction and best practices.
Communication: Communicate effectively with students, families, and support staff to promote student success.
Guidelines: Follows school policies and departmental guidelines for curriculum development and instructional practices. Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Science Education, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field.
Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with endorsements in Science-Biology, Chemistry, and EL/Bilingual Education (or willingness to obtain EL endorsement).
Experience working with multilingual learners is preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Strong Understanding of Science Content: Knowledge of Biology and Chemistry principles and pedagogy.
EL Strategies: Familiarity with research-based strategies for supporting English Learners.
Classroom Management: Ability to manage a diverse classroom effectively.
Collaboration Skills: Strong collaboration and communication skills.
Cultural Competence: Ability to foster an inclusive environment celebrating linguistic and cultural diversity. Working Conditions:
This position requires frequent standing and walking throughout the school day. Teachers work in a dynamic educational setting that is often fast-paced and intellectually stimulating. While the environment is generally structured, teachers must be adaptable and flexible to meet the needs of their students. Occasional evening events, such as parent-teacher conferences and open houses, may be required. The role involves managing a classroom environment, planning lessons, and collaborating with colleagues, all of which contribute to a fulfilling and engaging professional experience.
