The Impact You'll Make in this RoleAs Director of Development, you are responsible for the day-to-day operations of the development department. The Director of Development is also responsible for major gift fundraising and directly supervises two Development Managers.
As a Director of Development, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people in San Antonio. Here, you will make an impact by:
Establish and maintain positive, cooperative, and effective working relations with fellow employees.
Constantly exhibit a guest service attitude, a smile, and an obvious interest in guest comfort and service.
Communicate with the public in a courteous and tactful manner and assist guests with questions and directions to various areas of the Zoo. Address the guest - do not wait to be asked.
Remove trash and debris from public areas i.e. pick up litter whenever you see it.
Manages all strategies and activities for donor cultivation, solicitation, and relations for assigned portfolio
Researches and cultivates new or potential donors
Cultivates relationships with private and public funders to create meaningful connections between them and the Zoo's vision, mission, and programs
Supervises development staff
Prepares and manages the annual department budget including monthly reporting as well as event budgets and reporting
Creates office systems to support all Development projects and operations
Manages donor, gift record-keeping
Manages fundraising events and events staff
Manages the pledge reminder and acknowledgement programs for all fundraising events
Attends community events related to donor cultivation
Participates in outreach activities and performances outside regular business hours
Available to assist in any other capacity as assigned.
Works with the CEO, Chief Development Officer, Vice President, Board, Development Committee, and Major Gifts Committee to implement fundraising strategies
Any and all other duties as assigned. Your Skills and ExpertiseTo set you up for success in this role from day one, the San Antonio Zoo recommends the following skills/qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in nonprofit administration, business administration, communications, or equivalent experience.
Three to five years of demonstrated successful major gift fundraising experience.
Two years management experience preferred
Experience in leading fundraising events such as galas, luncheons, and other high-level events.
Must adhere to the highest ethical standards, demonstrate empathetic disposition and perseverance, and convey sensitivity to the needs of donors.
Excellent attention to details and follow-through as demonstrated through effective project management experience.
Demonstrated writing and editing skills.
Outstanding ability to work effectively in teams of diverse people and organizations.
Experience working with a donor database, as well as with Microsoft Excel.
Strong organizational, communications, problem-solving and analytical skills.
Highly self motivated and directed.
Ability to accommodate occasional long days or overnight travel.
Ability to work weekends, holidays, and after hour assignments.
