The Student Success Advisor (SSA) provides individualized student service through academic advising, coaching, and outreach to support student success. Seeing students as whole persons, they develop rapport and relationship with students; assist with academic planning, registration, and navigation of university processes and policies; coach and monitor student progress toward completing academic requirements and meeting personal, academic, and professional goals. In collaboration with campus partners, they conduct outreach and intervention to support student success, well-being, and sense of belonging.
Responsibilities
Provide holistic academic advising and success coaching for students throughout their academic career.
Serve as an academic advisor for assigned students during their first 60 credits. Serve as a Success Coach for assigned students for the entirety of their SCSU career.
Introduce and orient students to their academic requirements, academic planning tools and campus resources.
Assist students in creating educational goals, an academic plan, and interpretation of policies and procedures in relation to their goals.
Assist students with navigating University processes and procedures as needed.
Establish trust with assigned students, upon admission, develop rapport and a working relationship that includes regular meetings, coaching outreach messaging, careful documentation, tracking of student progress, and assessment of student success.
Provide timely intervention when students are identified as needing support through progress report campaigns, early alerts, referral from faculty or staff, or other retention efforts.
Assess student needs and provide appropriate academic and personal coaching, and, when necessary, connect students to appropriate campus and/or community resources.
Develop Success Plans with students who are on academic warning or probation, monitoring goal progress.
Provide intrusive and intensive coaching and support for provisionally admitted students among the assigned students.
Collaborate with academic staff, faculty and administrators in assigned college, school, or departments to support student success. This may include attending meetings, events, and/or providing training or coaching on advising and resources.
Enhance student success through support and execution of Advising and Student Transitions programs.
Participate in, and assist with as needed, Husky Advising and Registration events, serving in a variety of roles ranging from advising, presenting to students and/or their guests, and providing logistical and administrative support such as (but not limited to) identifying pre-placement testing requirements, providing check-out reviews or processing no-shows.
Develop and initiate programs designed to support academic success for students in special populations (including but not limited to) transfer students, provisionally admitted students, first generation students, international students, those academically exploring, or students served by Multicultural Student Services.
Assist with advising and coaching training, including updating documents and materials or presenting sessions to new graduate assistants, staff or faculty.
Participate in, and assist with as needed, Huskies 1st 4, serving a variety of roles, including but not limited to drop-in advising or presenting sessions designed to help students successfully transition to college.
Increase the visibility and influence of the Advising and Student Transitions Office in order to support students.
Represent Advising and Student Transitions at campus events including but not limited to Admissions events for perspective students, resource fairs, Commencement, and other programs designed to help student transition and succeed. Occasionally, represent A&ST on campus committees, including search committees seeking to hire essential campus partners.
Attend a minimum of eight campus events annually, often during non-business hours to support students and their sense of belonging.
Communicate regularly with faculty and support staff in assigned academic programs, taking a collaborative approach to student support, staying up-to-date on academic program requirements and opportunities and sharing pertinent updates on behalf of A&ST.
Assist with the assessment of A&ST programs and services to ensure excellence.
Engage in regular professional development, including attendance and participation in the NACADA conference at least once every three years.
Serve as EAB Navigate Administrator.
Serve as the EAB Navigate Administrator, managing system setup, configuration, and alignment with department goals.
Provide user support through training, role management, and troubleshooting for faculty, staff, and students.
Ensure data accuracy and integrity through regular audits, resolving discrepancies, and generating reports to support data-driven decisions.
Develop and manage custom workflows to streamline advising processes, case management, and student outreach.
Implement and evaluate retention strategies using Navigate features, while staying updated on best practices and collaborating with stakeholders to optimize the system.

Minimum Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Education or related field and one year of professional experience, OR a Bachelor’s degree and two years of professional experience in advising, counseling, education, coaching, student support, or other roles related to student or human services. OR equivalent combination of post-secondary training, education and/or professional experience.
Familiarity with academic advising, orientation, student success and/or related experience working with student services.
Experience with interpreting complex student data (transcripts, degree audits, assessment scores) and ability to navigate software programs and other forms of technology.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Experience and competency working with culturally and linguistically diverse populations.
Strong organizational and time management skills.
Preferred Qualification
Knowledge of University policies, rules, regulations, and laws relevant to student success functions.
Knowledge of student development theory, academic advising, coaching, or orientation.
Demonstrated experience and knowledge using and/or interpreting student information systems, degree audits, student success management platforms (EAB’s Navigate, Starfish, etc.), Microsoft Office Suite and shared cloud spaces (OneDrive or Google Drive).
