Veterinary Assistant – Harris County
Openwork is assisting Harris County Public Health in finding a Veterinary Assistant to support their veterinary program. If you thrive in a fast-paced environment and have a strong commitment to animal welfare, this could be the perfect role for you.
As a Veterinary Assistant, you will play a vital role in providing compassionate care for animals in the shelter and clinic. You will assist with daily husbandry, clinical treatments, and medical procedures while ensuring a safe and organized veterinary environment. Additionally, you will help educate pet owners about responsible pet care and work closely with the veterinary team to deliver high-quality medical support.
Key Responsibilities
Perform daily animal husbandry and care for pets under medical supervision while following proper safety protocols
Maintain clean and organized medical workspaces, stock supplies, and sterilize surgical equipment
Document treatments, diagnoses, and procedures in the shelter’s software system
Administer and dispense medications according to treatment plans
Obtain and perform diagnostic testing as directed by veterinary staff
Assist with animal restraint, radiography, treatments, and preventative care
Educate pet owners on responsible pet ownership and post-treatment care
Ensure adherence to health and safety standards in a high-volume animal shelter setting
What We’re Looking For
High school diploma or GED required
At least 6 + months of experience working in an animal care or shelter environment
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and data entry
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and team-oriented environment
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
This role is based in a high-energy animal shelter with exposure to animal allergens, strong odors, loud noises, and temperature variations
Requires standing, bending, lifting, and stooping for extended periods
Must be able to lift and restrain animals or other objects up to 50 pounds
Schedule & Compensation
$16.50 per hour, paid weekly
40-hour workweek with rotating weekend shifts
Must be flexible with scheduling to meet shelter needs
