Position Overview:
A well-established civil engineering firm is seeking a Senior Traffic Engineer to lead its traffic engineering practice across South Carolina. This is a high-visibility leadership role involving technical oversight, business development, and project management. The ideal candidate brings both technical expertise and a passion for growing teams and client relationships. This position offers a hybrid work schedule with flexibility for office and remote work.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead strategic traffic engineering growth initiatives in South Carolina
Manage and oversee the design and delivery of traffic-related projects
Mentor and support the professional development of junior staff
Serve as a technical expert in traffic planning, analysis, and engineering design
Coordinate traffic studies, crash analyses, signal design, maintenance of traffic plans, and signage/pavement marking plans
Contribute to proposal development and business development efforts
Engage with clients, contractors, government agencies, and project stakeholders
Maintain knowledge of local and state agency requirements (particularly SCDOT)
Manage department financials, staffing needs, hiring, and performance reviews
Required Qualifications:
Minimum of 10 years of progressive traffic engineering experience
Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in South Carolina
Demonstrated experience working with South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT)
Proficiency in traffic engineering software and simulation modeling tools (e.g., Synchro, HCS, VISSIM preferred)
Working knowledge of applicable design standards and traffic manuals
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
Preferred Qualifications:
Certification as a Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE)
Established client relationships in South Carolina
Proven experience with proposal development and marketing strategy
Familiarity with roadway lighting design and related systems
Work Environment:
Work is performed in a hybrid setting (office and remote). While primarily sedentary, occasional site visits or travel may be required. A professional and collaborative work culture supports this leadership role.
