Position Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Controller to oversee and manage all aspects of financial and administrative operations. This role is integral to maintaining the company's fiscal health, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory standards, and supporting strategic growth. The ideal candidate brings deep experience in construction or project-based accounting, strong leadership capabilities, and a proactive approach to financial management within a dynamic, growing business. Key Responsibilities:

General Accounting & Financial Management

Develop and implement accounting strategies, fiscal policies, and internal controls

Maintain accurate financial records, prepare periodic financial statements, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements

Oversee general ledger, budgeting, financial reporting, AP/AR, payroll, and balance sheet reconciliations

Provide financial insights to ownership and leadership to guide strategic planning

Coordinate with external CPA for annual reviews and tax filings

Manage cash flow, vendor payments, and company credit card accounts

Perform cost, ratio, and trend analyses as needed

Serve as liaison with banking, legal, insurance, and bonding partners Job Costing & Project Accounting

Oversee job costing systems, monitor budgets, and prepare work-in-progress reports

Evaluate bids, subcontractor contracts, and procurement activities

Collaborate with estimating and operations teams to optimize project profitability and performance Payroll & HR Oversight

Process weekly/biweekly payroll and ensure Davis-Bacon and certified payroll compliance

Manage payroll taxes, fringe benefits reporting, and garnishments

Oversee employee benefits programs, 401(k) administration, and PTO policy

Monitor employee receivables and coordinate with management on performance evaluations and recruitment

Supervise and support workers' comp, auto, and property claims Team Leadership & Administration

Supervise accounting and administrative staff; hire, train, evaluate, and support team members

Ensure effective communication with vendors, employees, and external stakeholders

Troubleshoot basic IT and software-related issues in coordination with service providers

Maintain and improve internal office management systems and procedures Required Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business OR at least 5 years of relevant accounting/financial management experience

Advanced supervisory and leadership skills

Proficient in MS Office (especially Excel)

Hands-on experience with departmental P&Ls, GL control, AP, AR, payroll (including Davis-Bacon), billing, inventory, and job costing

In-depth understanding of construction or project-based accounting Preferred Education and Experience:

CPA designation or MBA strongly preferred

At least 3 years in a controller or treasurer role within the HVACR or construction industry

Knowledge of state/federal fiscal laws and trends impacting the HVACR sector

Experience with contract review, bid evaluations, and project accounting

Prior experience in a general or trade contracting office

Strong computer skills with the ability to resolve light IT issues Work Environment & Expectations:

Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and provide leadership in a fast-paced environment

Occasional travel may be required to project sites or external partner meetings
