POSITION DETAILS:
Non-exempt; part-time; estimated 40-96 hours per month; variable hours and work schedule; Monday - Sunday; 4:30 a.m. - 12:30 a.m.; no-benefits
This position will perform a wide variety of duties providing park security presence, monitoring visitor activities, and performing opening/closing duties, to include basic custodial tasks for visitor use at various County parks. Work is performed at times when needed to assure patrol coverage, facility protection and to enhance visitor safety on Frederick County Park property and must be completed in all types of weather conditions. Supervision is received from the Park Ranger Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Communicate with the public on matters of park rules and regulations; write citations as needed
Patrol and inspect assigned park areas (on foot, on bicycle, or in County vehicle) to provide visible security for park users and park facilities
Open parks, assess park grounds and shelters to determine if maintenance/clean-up is needed prior to visitor use; perform clean-up tasks to include trash pick-up/removal, bathroom cleaning and servicing, shelter cleaning, and basic mechanical work
Secure parks at closing time by ensuring that all visitors have left, all buildings are secure, and gates are locked
Monitor security cameras and report any suspicious activity to the Supervisor or Frederick County Sheriff's Office
Conduct routine checks of facility conditions, lighting, cleanliness and safety/emergency equipment
Assist with crowd control and parking at large park events and provide emergency assistance to park patrons, as needed
Provide park patrons with information pertaining to facility reservations, Parks and Recreation events and other available activities
Assist with reservation conflicts, maintenance issues, safety issues and facility rental concerns
Maintain and submit a daily activity shift summary, incident reports, vandalism reports and other paperwork
Maintain assigned vehicle in presentable appearance/condition
Assist in the identification of park security issues and recommend resolution strategies
Perform other related duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
The qualifications/requirements, knowledge/skills/abilities and physical requirements or working conditions described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
Minimum age 18 years
High school graduation or the equivalent
Minimum 6 months of closely related park ranger, natural resource conservation, or law enforcement work experience OR 1 year of customer service work experience
Possession of a valid automobile operator's license
Current certifications in First Aid and CPR, or the ability to become certified within 90 days of hire and to maintain certifications thereafter
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
Ability to obtain and maintain a Frederick County Employee Driving Permit
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public
Effective spoken and written (English) communication skills including the ability to accurately maintain schedules and complete forms and reports, and to provide information and direction to park users
Ability to effectively access and utilize computerized systems and equipment
Demonstrate independent judgment with the ability to recognize and approach potentially dangerous situations and utilize conflict resolution skills
Ability to represent the division and Frederick County in a positive manner
Ability to work unsupervised while maintaining a high level of honesty, integrity and self-motivation
Ability to maintain professional attitude, appearance, manner and actions while on duty
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORKING CONDITIONS:
While working in this position, the employee is required to constantly walk, move, or traverse and drive; frequently sit, stoop. kneel, or crouch, and lift up to 50 pounds.
While working in this position, the employee is required to constantly work outdoors, walk on uneven ground, in hot temperatures above 100 degrees, and cold temperatures below 32 degrees, and in dirty and dusty environments; frequently work indoors.
Physical requirements include the ability to walk/run through cleared or wooded park areas; to work outside in all weather conditions; to open, close, lock and otherwise secure gates, doors and other such devices; to complete basic custodial and maintenance tasks. If assigned to patrol by use of bicycle, must be physically able to perform those duties as well.
Ability and willingness to work in adverse driving conditions

Ability and willingness to successfully complete law enforcement training and other job-related training
Available for varied weekday and/or weekend schedule as needed to accommodate park hours, seasonal activities, holidays and special events; typical summer coverage weekdays (4:00 p.m. - 12: 30 a.m.), weekends (4:30 a.m. - 12:30 a.m.); typical winter coverage weekdays (4:00 p.m. - 11:30 p.m.), weekends (4:30 a.m. - 11:30 p.m.)
Available on-call for emergency situations and special staffing needs
