Baldwin-Kekaulike-Kulanihakoi-Maui (BKKM) Complex Area: Since classroom teachers in Alternative Learning Programs, Supports, and Services (ALPSS) are confronted with the students’ needs directly, the teacher has a significant influence in helping students with addressing the issues at-promise students present with. The role of the ALPSS teacher is critical to: Have the passion, motivation and desire to work with at-promise students. Be the facilitator of learning and utilize various instructional strategies to personalize the learning. Provide direct instructional services in all content areas, with emphasis on English Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, guidance, and career and college readiness. Develop an appropriate program for each student based on assessment and other available data and information. Formal pre- and post-testing is an essential tool for determining student needs and instruction effectiveness. Other formative and summative assessments should be utilized. Utilize a variety of strategies and approaches in instruction appropriate to students’ needs. Understand student learning styles and utilize effective strategies to meet the needs of all learners in the ALPSS classroom. Provide opportunity for personalized and experiential learning. Maintain complete records of student data in Infinite Campus (to include, but not limited to, academic achievement, attendance, conducts personal observations, and behavior). Conduct conferences for students and parents. Empower students to facilitate student-led conferences. 57 Maintain open communication with persons who have interest in and/or responsibility for the student. Ensure that all student confidentiality is maintained and appropriate documentation for sharing of student information is current, documented and on file. Keep the parent(s)/guardian engaged with students’ learning. Plans, implements and arrange for career exposure opportunities for students. If Work Based Learning (WBL) is a component of the program, teachers will participate in Work Based Learning training for certification, pre-teach work skills, monitor placement and student engagement at the work site, conduct site visits and meet WBL requirements, maintain documentation and consistently communicate with the employer/supervisor. Provide classroom social-emotional learning and provide behavioral support in a safe learning environment. Integrate technology into the curriculum. Comply with HIDOE requirements for student participation in activities (transportation, field trips, parental consents, etc.)

Minimum Qualifications

The Hawaii State Department of Education is committed to hiring highly qualified teachers in every classroom. With the exception of designated Career and Technology Education (CTE) positions, the minimum qualification to apply for a teacher, librarian or counselor position is a Bachelor's Degree.

If you are hired without completing a Teacher's Education Program, you have a maximum of 3 years to obtain a valid Hawaii teaching license. You must enroll in a Program to continue employment with the Department. Within each year of employment, you must satisfactorily demonstrate active pursuit towards meeting Hawaii licensing requirements, as set forth by the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board (HTSB). It is your responsibility to ensure the program you have enrolled is aligned with the teaching line you are hired in.

Payday

New employees can expect their first paycheck within the first 3 pay periods of their start date. Payday is on the 5th and 20th (or previous business day) of every month.
