Nurse Practitioner (NP) – Travel Health Medicine
Location: Reston, VA (with travel to Falls Church and Ashburn clinics as needed)
Pay: $60.00 – $62.00/hour
Hours: Part-Time; flexible scheduling required based on clinic and client demand
Overview
At Passport Health, our Travel Health Nurse Practitioners (NPs) play a critical role in helping clients prepare for safe and healthy international travel. As a subject matter expert in travel medicine, the NP provides personalized education, administers vaccines, prescribes and dispenses travel-related medications (where permitted), and offers preventive strategies for illnesses such as malaria, traveler’s diarrhea, altitude sickness, and motion sickness.
Working both in-person at Passport Health clinics and via telehealth, NPs collaborate closely with Travel Health Consultant RNs by providing clinical oversight, prescription support, and ensuring quality care across various locations and states.
NPs are essential members of regional Area Teams, reporting to the Director of Clinical Operations and National Medical Director, and operating under collaborative agreements with Area Medical Directors. Regular meetings with other NPs and leadership support alignment, development, and clinical excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct comprehensive travel health assessments based on client medical history and travel itinerary
Recommend and administer travel vaccines using evidence-based guidelines
Prescribe and/or dispense travel-related medications, including malaria prophylaxis, antidiarrheals, and altitude/motion sickness medications (in accordance with state regulations)
Provide clear instructions on medication use and potential side effects
Identify contraindications or drug interactions and offer alternative treatment plans
Support telehealth consultations to broaden access to care across state lines
Collaborate with pharmacy staff to ensure prescription accuracy and compliance
Thoroughly document all client interactions, clinical decisions, and education provided
Serve as a clinical resource to Travel Health Consultants and regional team members
Participate in regular team meetings with NPs, Area Nurse Supervisors, Medical Directors, and the Clinical Operations team
Qualifications & Skills
Active Nurse Practitioner license in Virginia (or multistate), with willingness to obtain additional state licensure as needed
Certification and authority to prescribe medications (per state requirements)
Proficiency with technology, including EHR systems and telehealth platforms
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Collaborative mindset with the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
Previous experience in travel medicine, infectious disease, or urgent care is a plusCompany Description
