Job Description
Azena Medical is the leader in the design and manufacture of laser systems for oral-healthcare. From chair-side dental lasers that redefine soft-tissue precision to portable PBM systems trusted by elite athletes, our products blend photonics innovation with rock-solid embedded engineering. Join us at our Walnut Creek R&D headquarters and build the next generation of medical-grade laser platforms.
What you’ll do
• Create firmware and low-level software for new and existing diode-laser product lines built around NXP, Espressif and other ARM-class MCUs.
• Rapidly assimilate, refactor and extend a substantial legacy C++ codebase (17/20) that powers our current FDA-cleared devices.
• Architect portable HALs so the same application stack can run across multiple silicon families.
• Implement and tune RTOS-based scheduling (FreeRTOS / Zephyr) and bare-metal ISR paths for sub-µs timing.
• Bring-up new boards: linker scripts, bootloaders, secure-boot chains, OTA update partitions.
• Integrate high-reliability connectivity (Wi-Fi, BLE, CAN, USB) and secure telemetry pipelines.
• Collaborate daily with electrical, optics, mechanical and regulatory teams to hit safety, EMC and medical-device compliance targets.
• Drive code-quality pipelines (GoogleTest/Catch2, clang-tidy, MISRA, GitHub Actions) and mentor peers through design and code reviews.
Must-have qualifications
• 5+ years professional C++ embedded/firmware development (C++17 or later).
• Proven ability to read, debug and extend large, unfamiliar C++ codebases rapidly and safely.
• Hands-on experience with NXP (LPC / i.MX-RT) and/or Espressif ESP32 toolchains and SDKs.
• Deep knowledge of RTOS concepts, interrupt design, DMA, and low-level peripheral drivers (SPI, I C, UART, USB, Ethernet).
• Expertise in secure boot, OTA/DFU, partitioning, key provisioning and anti-rollback techniques.
• Fluent with J-Link/OpenOCD, logic analysers, oscilloscopes, ETM/SWO trace for board-level debug.
• Comfortable crafting CI/CD pipelines and enforcing static-analysis gates for medical-device reliability.
• Strong documentation habit (Markdown/Doxygen) and cross-disciplinary communication skills.
• U.S. work authorization and ability to work on-site in Walnut Creek five days a week.
Nice-to-have extras
• Power-management optimization for battery-powered or thermally-constrained systems.
• DSP or real-time signal-processing (CMSIS-DSP) for laser-pulse shaping or sensor fusion.
• Rust or Zig exposure for safety-critical modules.
• Experience with IEC 62304, ISO 13485, FDA 510(k) or other regulated product lifecycles.
• Python/LabVIEW scripting for manufacturing test fixtures.
Why Azena Medical
• In-office culture – Hardware labs, 3D printers plus daily collaboration with world-class engineers.
• Excellent benefit programs – Comprehensive benefits including employee/dependent medical package, plus dental and vision. Retirement programs including 401(k) and profit sharing.
• The chance to see your code improve patient outcomes in dental surgeries and athletic rehab clinics worldwide.
