The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County provides opportunities for people to connect with nature. We offer to the public 60 forest preserves, 175 miles of trails, 47 miles of rivers and streams, and 6 nature and cultural centers. We have 6 million visitors each year.

The District's mission is, "to acquire and hold lands containing forests, prairies, wetlands and associated plant communities or lands capable of being restored to such natural conditions for the purpose of protecting and preserving the flora, fauna and scenic beauty for the education, pleasure, and recreation of its citizens.

Job Purpose

This position performs construction and maintenance duties of structural assets, assisting the Bricklayer & Stone Mason, as well as other tradespersons, performing necessary tasks within the District preserves.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Primarily assist the Bricklayer/Stone Mason with all related activities to install, repair, remove, and replace masonry components of District wide assets

• Operate various machines and equipment, such as jackhammers, tampers, skid steer, grinders, saws, and mortar/cement mixers

• Use hand tools for digging, trenching, shoveling, finishing, tuck pointing and general maintenance repairs

• Assist operator and other tradesmen with excavations for installation, replacement, repair, and removal of utilities and other infrastructure improvements

• Properly and safely load, transport, and unload materials, tools, and equipment for daily work tasks

• Perform mobilization, worksite set-up/break-down, safety set-up and controls through the work assignment

• Work independently or with a crew, providing working guidance to complete assigned work

• Preventative maintenance and inspections as assigned by the Supervisor

• Remove snow; maintain a safe and organized maintenance shop yard

• Report observed structural asset and safety related deficiencies, and safety making recommendations as necessary

• Availability during off-duty hours for emergency call outs and/or standby

• Assist all trades as deemed necessary by Supervisor

• Perform other duties as required

Education and Experience Required

Related Experience: Two (2) years field experience in general construction trades, primarily masonry, as a laborer or as a maintenance worker; or equivalent combination of related training and experience.

Special training or other license, certification, etc.: Possess or have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Drivers license with combination and air brake endorsements within six (6) months of employment. Ability to complete OSHA 10, respirator, confined space, aerial lift, silica, and all applicable ongoing training per OSHA 1910 and 1926 or EPA safety training, as required for this job.

Knowledge of: Methods, practices, processes and materials used in construction trades, facilities management and maintenance activities; occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions and use of personal protection equipment related to construction trades.

Skills In: Understanding and following oral and written instructions; fundamental use and maintenance of hand tools, power tools, and heavy equipment associated with various trade work; performing manual labor related to maintenance and trade activities; operating trucks and trailers, identification and reporting of occupational hazards transportation materials and equipment; understanding and use of personal protection equipment. Ability to identify and report infrastructure deficiencies and hazards.

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 6:30 am - 2:30 pm. May include voluntary snow plowing or emergency call back work outside of normal hours.

Starting Rate: $29.59 - 32.90 per hour.

Internal candidate's wage adjustments are to follow CBA.
