Instrumentation and Electronics Technician – Waco, TX

This is a full-time, direct hire position available immediately at a brand new manufacturing plant in Waco, Texas. Our client is a global leader in manufacturing, and they are expanding with new plants popping up around the world. This strategic location in Waco sits on 65 acres, and the plant will consist of 450,000 square feet of fresh and clean manufacturing and production floor with cutting edge technology and some of the most advanced machines in this sector of manufacturing.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Instrumentation & Electronic Technician(s) is responsible for the efficient, safe, and reliable operating condition of the site manufacturing control and electrical systems. The Technician must be multi-skilled to manage, maintain, and troubleshoot site’s electrical power systems, instrumentation, motor controls, PLC, HMI, data systems, and factory control infrastructure (servers, PC’s, and networks).

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Provide support during machine installations and upgrades including: interfacing auxiliary equipment, identifying and correcting errors in programming and wiring and ensuring vendors and contractors are meeting our needs and expectations

Maintains and repairs electronic instrumentation and equipment to provide reliable, well maintained equipment to ensure service quality

Physically setting up and maintaining electronics, instruments, automation, and measurement equipment

Troubleshooting all electronic and data acquisition equipment; Adjust, repair or replace faulty components

Calibrating pressure gauges and meter measurement equipment

May perform programming and troubleshooting operations on computers and terminal data acquisition equipment

Troubleshoot and program automated facility control equipment, calibrate required safety devices, manipulate facility valves to receive the desired operating status

Troubleshoot, diagnose problems and repair plant mechanical, instrumentation, and electrical systems

Read and interpret planning documents, schematics, wiring diagrams, specifications, drawings, manuals, blueprints and engineering sketches

Perform layout and wiring of electrical panels

Identify and recommend changes to improve plant performance utilizing existing or new control systems; make program modifications in PLC’s logic, HMI’s programs and servo controller logic to improve equipment performance

Diagnoses mechanical and electrical problems using technical drawings (e.g., blueprints, electronic/mechanical schematics) and diagnostic tools (e.g. multi-meter, laptop)

Performs field calibrations using multi-meters to test pH, conductivity, flow, pressure, humidity, RTD, thermocouple, and other levels as needed

Ability to work in a team environment, record data in a computer system, communicate with multiple departments, and complete work orders and preventative maintenance on equipment indoors and outdoors

Performs quality checks according to procedure and repairs equipment in a timely manner

Responsible to maintain proper records. This position may be required to participate in emergency response activities as necessary

Participate in the safety programs and/or committees; follow all site safety policies, company policies and procedures work safely and wear appropriate PPE

Responsible for assisting other technicians with maintenance and repair duties; including training co-workers on the safe and efficient techniques to maintain electrical system operations and equipment

Handle time accounting and complete work orders

Maintaining a tidy work environment and adhering to industry regulations

Obtain and maintain licenses, operator permits or certifications as required

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Required – two-year technical degree or equivalent is required for consideration. A degree in process controls or similar technical fields is preferred, including courses in computer science. Six years of control, electrical, or electronics experience including computer programming, systems analysis and design, electrical or electronics production system troubleshooting, and problem resolution will be considered in lieu of degree requirements. (Two years of this experience must be in an industrial production/manufacturing environment)

Minimum 3 years’ experience in maintenance and repair of instrument systems, process analyzers, control valves, pressure/flow measurement; prefer electronics manufacturing experience

Minimum 3 years’ experience maintaining motor controls, relay logic, fiber optics and associated end devices

GENERAL SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:

Knowledge of PLCs, VFDs, Servos, Ethernet and wireless communication systems as related to plant automation

Operational knowledge of an oscilloscope & multi-meter, soldering wires & connectors, operation of various crimping tools, wire stripping, ohm’s law, continuity testing, pinning out a military type connector, routing & tie wrapping cables, drilling & tapping holes, and building junction boxes

Advanced understanding and ability to troubleshoot, replace, and configure sensors and instrumentation such as photo-eyes, proximity switches, pressure, flow, level and temperature sensors

Advanced understanding and ability to troubleshoot, configure, and replace non-similar motor control components

Proficient in understanding and ability to troubleshoot root cause, configure, and replace non-similar controls hardware, such as input/output modules, human machine interfaces (HMIs), safety relays, and other industrial controls

Working knowledge of all automation standard practices

Advanced electrical knowledge and understanding of electrical safety

Able to work on multiple control voltages (DC/AC) and up to 480V

Ability to read and interpret P&ID drawings, pneumatic, hydraulic and electrical schematics for use in system understanding and troubleshooting

Have an understanding of national electrical codes

Strong organizational skills and proven ability to maintain accurate, detailed records that will be audited periodically

Ability to work on multiple projects at once with tight deadlines

Must be able to identify and execute improvement opportunities through both process improvements and system improvements

Travel required for training and to regularly conduct business with and meet with vendors/suppliers

Strong understanding of supply chain systems, practices, process, and procedures

Must be a self-starter and have the desire and ability to take ownership and responsibility with little direction

Ability to work with employees from many different cultures and backgrounds

Preference will be given to qualified local candidates

SOFTWARE/COMPUTER SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

General knowledge of basic hardware and software and uses of a variety of different computer operating systems such as Microsoft Office Work, Excel, Outlook, Google Workspace, and web-site software

Knowledge in Data Acquisition concepts, hardware, and interfacing

HOURS / SPECIAL CONDITIONS: 12 hour rotating shifts 4 days on and 4 days off; Rotating shifts requires working night shifts; Present to fulfill job duties & meet operational demands/support; Schedule may vary depending on plant operational needs thus flexibility is required which may include long days, evenings, weekends, holidays and overtime; Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of this position
