This is a hybrid role requiring 2 days per week (Tuesday and Wednesday) in-person in our Washington, DC office.
JOB SUMMARY
The State Government Affairs Associate is responsible for a wide range of functions in support of AOA’s public policy goals to advance osteopathic medicine, promote access to and quality of healthcare, and develop a strong physician workforce at the state level.
The State Government Affairs Associate will perform extensive research and writing to inform state policy issues and initiatives. The State Government Affairs Associate will also provide support to key staff in advocating for the association’s state policy priorities and advancing its agenda across legislative, regulatory, and non-governmental policymaking stakeholders. The State Government Affairs Associate will also be responsible for assisting with planning and staffing meetings (virtual and in-person – some travel will be required) and other projects as they’re assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Provide support as necessary to VP of State and International Affairs, VP of Public Policy, and VP of Advocacy and Political AffairsAssist with monitoring, evaluating, and responding to state policy developments and issues, including legislative and regulatory tracking and analysis, affiliate and member inquiries, and comment letter writing.
Work with osteopathic affiliates to ensure a united effort in supporting or opposing legislative or regulatory measures.
Conduct research on current and proposed legislative and regulatory measures as needed for state osteopathic societies, AOA members and the AOA’s Council on State Health Affairs (CSHA).
Develop resource materials (white papers, policy proposals, comparative law charts, etc.) for staff and member advocates to use in support of AOA public policy and advocacy efforts.
Identify opportunities to align and advance state and federal public policy priorities of the profession.
Draft correspondence in support, opposition, or providing suggested amendments to introduced legislation or proposed regulatory changes to state legislators, state legislative committees, and/or regulatory agencies.
Provide administrative support for AOA’s Council on State Health Affairs and the American Association of Osteopathic Examiners, as well as other projects, including dissemination of meeting invitations, processing registrations, preparation of meeting materials and minutes,etc.
Develop and maintain strong interdepartmental relationships with communications, membership, and affiliate affairs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION OR EXPERIENCE
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Public Health, Legal Studies, Communications, or related field. Graduate degree preferred.
Experience: A minimum of 3-5 years of substantive experience in health policy, law, state government or a related area.
Licensure or Certification: NA.
Systems: High proficiency with computer programs and applications including MS Office, Zoom, and Adobe Acrobat.
Communications:
Proven ability to prioritize multiple
projects.Excellent verbal and written communication skills demonstrating the ability to simplify complex information and craft messages for a wide range of
audiences.A 2 – 3 page academic or professional writing sample may be required.
Special Skills:
This position requires the ability to interact tactfully with professionals on all levels within the association.
Ability to handle confidential material, deal with sensitive situations and exhibit a high degree of attention to detail.
The ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment is required.
Excellent interpersonal skills, team orientation, and ability to collaborate within and across teams.

Annual Salary Range: $105,000k - $115,000k
