Engineering a world of possibilities The Native American Mining and Energy Sovereignty (NAMES) Initiative at the prestigious Colorado School of Mines is seeking a creative and analytical Research Assistant to join our innovative team. Established in 2023 and operated within the Payne Institute at one of the world's premier research and engineering schools, our Initiative fosters collaboration between tribal governments, industry, and academia to address complex "all-of-the-above" energy challenges and opportunities.
Position Overview
This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research at the intersection of energy development, Native Nation sovereignty, and environmental stewardship. The Research Assistant will help shape the narrative of Native Nation development through energy initiatives while building valuable connections across tribal communities, industry, and academia.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct comprehensive research on energy challenges, opportunities, policy, legislation, and history with Native Nations
Contribute to writing research papers, essays, and case studies that advance understanding of tribal energy development
Support the planning and facilitation of convenings with multidisciplinary participants
Assist in developing innovative approaches to energy management that respect tribal sovereignty
Contribute to projects that build capacity and advance Native Nations across the U.S., Alaska, Hawaii, First Nations, and globally
Required Qualifications
Minimum of a bachelor's degree or currently pursuing a bachelor's or higher degree in mining or metallurgical engineering, environmental engineering, statistics, economics, or related discipline
Demonstrated understanding of tribal governments, tribal relations, and tribal energy development
Evidence of strong analytical and research capabilities
Evidence of creative thinking about all of the above energy pathways and policy
1+ years of relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications
Related experience in industry, academia, or government
Publication record, as demonstrated by peer-reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings, or technical books
Experience working directly with Native communities or tribal organizations
Ability to approach energy challenges with cultural sensitivity and respect for Native Nation knowledge
Demonstrated interest in sustainable development and energy sovereignty

Annual Rate and Benefits
$60,000-$70,000 annually
*A hybrid work schedule may be available for this position
