Venteon was recently engaged in a new search for a Controller with a well-established not-for-profit fund located in Detroit, MI.

Position Overview:

Our client has an immediate need for a Controller. Position reports to the Director of Financial Services and serves as lead for the Assistant Controller and Accountant positions. Essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to:

Monthly and annual financial statement preparation including footnotes and variance analysis.

Leading the monthly close process.

Annual budget preparation and quarterly variance analysis.

Other ad hoc reporting as requested.

Payroll preparation including payroll tax reporting on a month, quarterly and annual basis

Weekly/bi-weekly payroll preparation

W2 and 1099 reporting

Fixed asset accounting and property tax reporting.

Investment accounting includes monthly accounting and reconciliations for income, realized and unrealized gain/loss, and fund manager expenses for multiple investments.

Working with the external auditors, including preparation of work papers, serving as the central point of contact for audit requests, coordination of sample selections, confirmations, etc.

Account reconciliations of GL accounts and coordination with external transactions affecting the books and preparation and review of work of others.

Ideal Qualifications for the Controller:

Bachelor s degree in Accounting is required; CPA preferred

Ideally, 10+ years of experience (public or private sector)

Adaptability to other non-standard software is a plus (Basys, PCMACS).

Advanced Excel skills are required.

Great Plains Dynamics or similar general ledger package experience.

Experience with reporting tools (Insight, Crystal Reports, Access, Power BI).

Experience with banking software (JP Morgan Access or similar).

Experience with IRS reporting tools (TIN lookup, other e-filings).

Excellent communication skills, verbal, and written communication skills.

Interpersonal skills dealing with accounting staff and other groups such as Operations, HR, senior management in a respectful and thoughtful manner.

A high degree of integrity is required. This position handles a wide variety of sensitive and confidential data.

A deadline driven mentality is required. This position holds the group to meet deadlines for month end and year end closing, audits, and tax reporting.

Preferred/Desired Skills and Experience

Experience with IRS Forms 5500 (and schedules) and 990/990T.

Working in an environment with HIPAA rules and requirements.

Experience in insurance or health care related entity.

Not-for-profit and ERISA entity experience.

Experience with Multi-Entity Manager or similar tools.

The position requires the ability to work with detailed information in a very accurate manner.

The position requires the ability to be both analytical, and probing not just looking at the numbers, but what is behind the numbers.

Good problem-solving skills are necessary
