Position Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Controls Engineer to join our Automation Service team. This role requires in-depth knowledge of industrial automation systems, PLC programming, servo drives, VFDs, and vision camera integration. The ideal candidate will bring a hands-on, solutions-oriented approach to troubleshooting and optimizing automated systems in fast-paced industrial environments.
Key Responsibilities:
Design, develop, and program PLC-based control systems (primarily Allen-Bradley/Rockwell, but also Siemens, Keyence, and/or Mitsubishi platforms).
Write and modify Rockwell RSLogix/Studio 5000 logic from scratch to suit unique automation processes.
Integrate and troubleshoot servo drives and motors, Versa VFDs, and industrial automation components.
Implement and maintain GCCS or GCCH control architectures.
Configure, calibrate, and integrate vision camera systems for inspection and positioning (e.g., Cognex, Keyence).
Maintain and service nutrunners, boltrunners, and feeder systems used in automated assembly environments.
Support field service efforts with troubleshooting, system upgrades, and preventive maintenance.
Develop detailed electrical schematics and wiring diagrams for new and existing automation systems.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams including mechanical, electrical, and software engineers.
Document and report system performance, issues, and resolutions for client and internal records.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation, or related field (or equivalent experience).
5–7+ years of hands-on experience in industrial automation and control systems.
Proven expertise in Allen-Bradley/Rockwell PLCs, with the ability to program from scratch.
Experience with alternative platforms such as Siemens, Mitsubishi, or Keyence.
Familiarity with Versa VFDs, servo systems, and motion control applications.
Practical knowledge of vision camera systems (installation, configuration, troubleshooting).
Experience with nutrunner, boltrunner, and feeder system maintenance and integration.
Ability to read and develop electrical schematics and panel layouts.
Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and communication skills.
Willingness to travel for field service and client support (up to 50% travel as required, typically closer to 30%) - (Mainly traveling to areas around MI, with occasional travel to project locations in Kentucky and Alabama)
Preferred Qualifications:
Degree in Electrical, Controls, Computer Science, Mechatronics Engineering or Mechanical Engineering w/ Electrical/Controls Experience
Familiarity with robotic systems, safety PLCs, and EtherNet/IP, Profinet, or DeviceNet networks.
Experience with HMI/SCADA systems such as FactoryTalk View or Siemens WinCC.
Previous exposure to automotive or high-speed manufacturing environments.
