The Laboratory Supervisor position provides full-time management for the Beaven Hall vivarium and laboratory facility to carry out essential animal care functions, and the position provides technical and administrative assistance to the Psychology Department particularly when other departmental staff are not on contract. The position reports to the chair of the Psychology Department, working a regular 5-day work schedule including occasional weekend days. Holiday work is expected, and the position is the point of contact for all off-hour emergencies. Responsibilities include purchasing and maintenance of equipment used in teaching and research, supervising animal care and student assistants involved therein, and interfacing with other departments (i.e., HR, Facilities, ITS, AV, DPS, etc.) as needed to maintain department infrastructure and operations.

Major Areas of Responsibility

Psychology Department Responsibilities

Overseeing faculty startup funds

Purchasing equipment both for faculty labs and departmental needs

Monitoring budgets (research and department) and maintaining relevant records

Coordinating with external departments or offices for department logistics. For example:

ITS for printer support and replacement, new computer equipment purchases

Director of Academic Budget and Operations for determining funding constraints

Human Resources for student employee hiring and payroll matters

Coordinating with external departments or offices for building logistics. For example:

Facilities for repairs, equipment moves, renovations, and other work with outside contractors

Public safety for space access and security

Work with department chair to develop and implement plan for departmental space. For example:

Addressing office furniture needs

Maintaining information about combination lock codes and key assignments Vivarium Responsibilities

Daily care of rodents and birds (providing food/water)

Organization of weekly vivarium maintenance schedule

Regular cage cleaning on a weekly schedule

Hiring, training, and supervision of student vivarium workers to complete the above activities

Monitoring of vivarium and laboratory environmental conditions (e.g. temperature, humidity)

Maintenance of vivarium and laboratory facility

Maintenance of vivarium and laboratory equipment

Coordination with facilities department for environmental condition correction

Coordination of animal facility and laboratory inspections

Coordination of veterinary care visits, and occasional transport of animals and/or medication to or from external veterinarians

Coordination with applicable safety committees

Coordination of compliance with IACUC, OLAW, and applicable safety guidelines

Coordination of hazardous waste removal and disposal

Coordination of controlled substance storage and disposal

Coordination of chemical storage, disposal, and inventory

Represent psychology department on College's Chemical Safety Committee

Record keeping

Create and maintain documents that describe vivarium procedures

Responsibility for coverage of animal care during weekends, holidays, and breaks (winter and summer)

Designated personnel for animal care during a weather emergency Liaison with Office Staff (to provide continuity for department functions)

Budget management

Purchasing of supplies and equipment

Maintenance of equipment service contracts Minimum Qualifications

Associates degree or high school completion

Reliable transportation for off-campus travel and emergencies

Comfort working with and handling small animals (e.g. pigeons and mice)

Ability to manage the Psychology Department's equipment and facilities

Ability to supervise undergraduate workers and assistants

Ability to work with institutional information systems for budgeting, purchasing, and timekeeping/payroll management

Ability to manage diverse and concurrent responsibilities efficiently and assume new duties on short notice

Organizational skills and the ability to work independently

Aptitude to solve problems with equipment and processes

Good interpersonal and communication skills

Ability to interact well with a large and diverse group of faculty and students Additional Information: Due to the nature and scope of this position, the animals in the lab need daily care therefore the laboratory supervisor may need to come in on some evenings, weekends, and holidays. The Laboratory Supervisor will be the first point of contact in the event of emergencies that occur in the lab.
