Position Summary: The Materials and Processing (M&P) Engineer leads Barber-Nichol's efforts in material selection, processing plans and troubleshooting material investigations stemming from new order design, process plans and shop routers, through returned good investigations. The M&P Engineer will work closely with engineering and operations to ensure requirements are met from customer specification, industry specifications and internal requirements.
Key Results Areas:
1. Ensure organizational compliance with industry standards including but not limited to:
NASA-STD-6016 - Standard Materials and Processes Requirements for Spacecraft
AWS welding specs or J-STD Soldering
MAPTIS, MMPDS and pertinent mechanical property specs
Additive manufacture processes
Special Processes (Plating, Coating, NDT, etc.) 2. Lead M&P process through the project lifecycle including specification compliance, material selection, design and engineering drawing reviews, manufacturing guidance, and failure analysis.
3. Deep understanding and willingness to research material sciences as they apply to solving engineered requirements, fabrication and manufacturability from material selection through hardware delivery.
4. Support the Engineering and Procurement departments in identifying / vetting key vendors for enabling technical capabilities (including but not limited to casting, gear / spline, additive manufacturers, and NADCAP Special Processors).
5. Assists in validation of material selections for Barber-Nichols machines.
6. Develop manufacturing processes to support product manufacturing to meet customer requirements by identifying needs for, writing procedures and overseeing execution of process qualification including the following but not limited to:
Laser and electrochemical etching
Grinding of martensitic materials
Welding
Soldering
Coatings 7. Dispositions (or assists in disposition) of hardware that is discrepant for M&P reasons.
8. Troubleshoot material failures through standardized root cause analysis methods.
Requirements
Qualifications:
To qualify for this position, an individual must possess the knowledge, training, experience and abilities required.
Education and Training:
Bachelors or Master's degree in Engineering or similar degree with a focus in material science, electronics, or equivalent combination of education and experience working in high aptitude engineering and manufacturing environment.
Proven Subject Matter Expert in at least one, but preferably multiple disciplines. I.E., welding, ECM, castings, electronics manufacturing, etc. Experience:
Minimum five years related experience leading M&P tasks.
Proven track record as acting liaison between engineering and operations to ensure requirements adherence for space, defense or similar industries.
Comprehensive understanding of diverse material selection and manufacturing process: conventional, additive manufacturing, soldering, welding, etc.
Experience developing material test plans, performing corrosion testing, selecting coatings, executing compatibility testing, etc.
Support design and of new product development material selection.
Background in metallurgy, welding, and/or electronics manufacturing. Other:
Must be willing to work overtime as required.
Cyclical travel up to 25 - 50% of working time to support vendor visits. Skills:

Work Environment: This job primarily operates in a clerical office setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers and filing cabinets. While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is also exposed to high level of manufacturing and equipment noise. Duties are performed indoors in a manufacturing environment with temperature changes. Exposure to hazardous materials, fumes or airborne particles and moving mechanical parts with vibration.
ITAR Requirements:
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance. U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position needs an active U.S. Security Clearance for employment. Non-U.S. Citizens may not be eligible to obtain a security clearance. The Department of Defense Consolidated Adjudications Facility (DoD CAF), a federal government agency, handles the adjudicative aspects of the security clearance eligibility process for industry applicants. Adjudicative factors which affect the outcome of the eligibility determination include, but are not limited to, allegiance to the U.S., foreign influence, foreign preference, criminal conduct, security violations and illegal drug use.

Compensation and Benefits:
The salary range for this role is $90,000 - $115,000. This range represent the anticipated minimum and maximum base + bonus for this position based upon a good faith and reasonable estimate. The final compensation for this position will be set based on the applicant's qualifications (education, training and/or experience related to this role), and therefore, may fall outside the range shown, depending on the circumstances.
