Job Title: Interim Director of Athletics

This is an interim position for the 2025-26 school year. Interested candidates will be considered for the permanent position.

The Finney Search Group will conduct a national search for a permanent Director of Athletics at the beginning of the 2025-26 school year.

POSITION SUMMARY

Chadwick's Athletic Director leads a dynamic, mission-driven K-12 athletics and physical education program that embodies the school's core values and educational philosophy. Committed to fostering a culture of excellence, character development, and school spirit, the program ensures that all students benefit from high-quality physical education and opportunities to participate in competitive team sports.

Overseeing a program of dedicated student-athletes and coaches, the Athletic Director champions physical education, competitive achievement, and character education, emphasizing sportsmanship, teamwork, and personal growth. Department members and coaches collaborate to cultivate athletic engagement, resilience, and leadership, reinforcing the school's mission to prepare students for lifelong learning as global citizens with keen minds, exemplary character, self-knowledge, and the ability to lead.

This position requires significant time commitments outside of the traditional workday to manage athletic competitions, including evenings and weekends.

ASSOCIATED RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership & Program Oversight

Direct a comprehensive K-12 athletics program, managing over 50 coaches and 22 sports while ensuring alignment with the school's mission and values.

Serve on the school's senior administrative team, advocating for athletics as a vital component of student development.

Lead the athletics leadership team, which includes the Assistant Athletic Director, Physical Education Chair, and Middle School Athletics Director, to ensure a cohesive and well-coordinated program across divisions.

Promote school spirit, sportsmanship, and excellence in Chadwick athletics. Coaching & Professional Development

Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate Upper School coaches.

Ensure ongoing professional development for all coaches, emphasizing strong mentorship and leadership.

Set, publicize, and enforce exemplary conduct standards for all coaches, including compliance with the C.I.F. coaches' code of ethics.

Develop, publish, and maintain a coaches' handbook outlining policies, expectations, and best practices for both full-time and part-time (walk-on) coaches.

Partner with the Assistant Athletic Director to support and mentor new and walk-on coaches, ensuring a smooth transition into Chadwick athletics. Program Coordination & Communication

Work closely with the Middle School Athletics Director to strengthen the 6-8 athletic program and foster continuity into Upper School sports.

Collaborate with the Physical Education Chair to hold regular department meetings, ensuring alignment between athletics and physical education.

Partner with the Assistant Athletic Director to review, refine, and implement policies that maintain the excellence of the K-12 athletics program.

Support student-athletes pursuing college athletics, working closely with college counselors, club teams, and external coaches to provide guidance on recruitment, eligibility, and exposure.

Maintain clear and effective communication with parents, the Booster Club, faculty, and the broader Chadwick community.

Represent and promote Chadwick athletics at school events, admissions functions, and external meetings, including Prep League and C.I.F. gatherings.

Ensure timely and accurate media communication regarding team performance and athletics news. Operations & Logistics

Oversee practice, game, and tournament schedules for all Upper School teams, ensuring alignment with the school calendar.

Manage schedule changes and communicate updates to coaches, parents, and administrators.

Coordinate all extended travel and overnight trips for athletic competitions.

Arrange, confirm, and manage transportation for Upper School teams.

Secure and coordinate officials for home contests and tournaments.

Organize off-campus practice and game facilities as needed.

Manage the Assistant Athletic Director who oversees day-to-day logistics, including:

Ensuring proper set-up and clean-up for athletic events.

Managing uniform and equipment inventory.

Providing on-the-ground support to both student-athletes and coaches to enhance the athletic experience. Facilities, Equipment & Budget

Ensure the safety, security, and maintenance of all athletic facilities.

Oversee the purchase, inventory, and distribution of athletic uniforms and equipment.

Develop and manage annual and multi-year budgets, ensuring fiscal responsibility. Compliance & Administration

File all required C.I.F. paperwork, including eligibility, contest, and playoff documentation.

Communicate athletics-related concerns and updates to the appropriate administrators Education, experience and skill requirements

REQUIRED AND PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCES, AND SKILLS

Successful experience as a secondary school or college athletic director is strongly preferred; 3+ years of experience as an Athletic Director preferred.

Minimum educational requirement - Bachelor degree

Compensation range - $160,000 - $180,000

On campus housing is available for this position as part of the total compensation package.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT

Required to lift and carry up to a maximum of 25 lbs., in a correct manner consistent with the appropriate training provided by the School.

Occasionally required to use hand to finger, handle or feel objects, touch and use tools, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, bend, stoop, twist, lift, reach, push, pull, grasp, balance, kneel, crouch, crawl, grasp, talk, hear, and walk during the course of employment.

Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and an ability to adjust focus.

May use telephone, computer, copier, and other office equipment in the course of a day.

Required to sit while operating word processing equipment for approximately 6-8 hours daily, repetitive motion for typing and other keystroke needs.
