Chart Audit Coordinator II

Role/Position Definition: Under direction, acts as coordinator of all surgical charge entry and audit to maintain appropriate charges and deadlines. Performs specialized administrative duties interacting significantly with clinical staff pertaining to charge entry and charge audit, utilizing a knowledge of revenue cycle practices; audits the charges on surgical charts; performs revenue cycle defense audits and under/over charge audits. Communicates audit findings to the Revenue Cycle/Data Quality Committee and works closely with a variety of individuals to resolve discrepancies.
This is a specialized administrative role, responsible for financial and administrative duties in support of the revenue cycle, working closely with various hospital departments to verify the services provided as well as the total billed charges on all types of audits. Is expected to apply the knowledge of hospital services, health care treatments and medical terminology in order to audit charges on bills and support hospital efforts to maximize reimbursements. This position also works with HIIM to assist with quality and accuracy of the medical record.
Qualifications/Position Requirements:
A. Education/Experience
Associates in Nursing Degree preferred
Minimum of 2 years as Surgical Technologist required
At least two years performing charge audit

C. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Typical knowledge of materials management, scrub technologist, nursing and surgeon related charges as it applies to surgical patients in an acute care hospital.
Read and understand patient medical records and other treatment documentation; interpret medical provider notes and comments, including the use of common acronyms and abbreviations.
Identify discrepancies between medical information and financial charges.
Collect, interpret and evaluate narrative and statistical data pertaining to administrative, fiscal management and patient matters.
Utilize standard business equipment, including computer hardware and software.
Analyze and resolve problems and complaints.
Strong communication and organization skills required
Strong computer knowledge required
Proficient knowledge of Hospital Information Systems
Microsoft Office
Knowledge of medical terminology, including common procedures.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others including physicians, nurses, administrators, managers, auditors, and other health care industry personnel.
Duties & Responsibilities:
A. Strong communication and organization.
B. Ability to work in a high volume office environment.
C. Develop and maintain a good working rapport with interdepartmental personnel as well as other department areas within the facility.
D. Solid knowledge of medical terminology, HIPAA privacy laws.
E. Understanding of Human Anatomy and Physiology.
F. Coordinates scheduling of charge/chart auditor staff to meet daily and month end deadlines of entering charges for all surgical patients.
G. Coordinates staff workload to meet deadlines of entering charges for all surgical patients.
H. Trains all chart auditors on use of software and paper charts to appropriately and accurately charge items for each surgical patient.
I. Reviews work of chart audit staff to ensure accuracy in chart review and charge entry.
J. Routinely communicates with manager/director regarding reimbursement concerns, questionable charge practices by surgical staff.
