General Summary

This position applies expertise in DoD, Air Force (AF), and standard engineering/scientific principles, processes, and procedures to enhance the performance and sustainability of current and future AF and joint service weapon systems. Responsibilities include implementing MIL-HDBK-516C Airworthiness Certification Criteria for aircraft systems and subsystems and supporting System Integrity Programs, including the Mechanical Systems Integrity Program (MECSIP). Additional duties involve maintaining the Critical Safety Item (CSI) list and overseeing airworthiness certification for mission partner aircraft.

The role requires familiarity with Air Force Policy Directive (AFPD) 62-6, USAF Airworthiness policies, associated AFIs, and Airworthiness Bulletins. Responsibilities include ensuring compliance with standardized processes and issuing flight authorizations. The candidate will translate user requirements into weapon system specifications to guide the design, development, fabrication, testing, and evaluation of weapons systems, subsystems, and equipment for deployment.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

System Safety Engineering:

Lead system safety engineering efforts, including mishap risk assessments.

Review contractor safety proposals and analyses.

Evaluate safety concerns from using/support commands and resolve high-priority safety issues.

Technical Product Support:

Provide support for creating or reviewing the following:

Technical evaluations, plans, and engineering studies.

Acquisition documents such as:

Initial Capabilities Document (ICD).

Operational Requirements Document (ORD).

Concept of Operations (CONOPS).

System Requirements Document (SRD).

System Specifications.

Requests for Proposals (RFPs).

Systems Engineering Plan (SEP).

Test and Evaluation Master Plan (TEMP).

Acceptance Test Procedures (ATPs).

Program Environment, Safety, and Occupational Health Evaluation (PESHE).

Information Support Plan (ISP).

Avionics and Technical Requirements Support:

Ensure compliance with technical requirements for avionics development, testing, sustainment, and operations, including:

Navigation and voice communication systems.

Line of Sight (LOS) and Beyond Line of Sight (BLOS) data link systems.

Military and civilian communication networks.

Network protocols and security (e.g., IPSec).

Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP)/Extensible Markup Language (XML) packaging of network commands.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

BS/MS degree in an ABET-accredited engineering discipline. (

Minimum of 15 years' functional area experience

Apply an understanding of DoD, AF, and common engineering/scientific principles, processes, and procedures to improve performance and sustainability of existing and future AF and joint service weapon systems.

Must understand how to apply MIL-HDBK-16C Airworthiness Certification Criteria, to aircraft systems and subsystems

Experience working on each stage of the system development life cycle from initiation through deployment/sustainment.

Demonstrated proficiency with process modeling and developing workflow diagrams.

Proven ability to elicit and interpret requirements and translate to technical specifications/system design following best practices and design patterns.

Champion in communicate with management, technical staff, and end users in a clear and professional manner.

Experience with engineering practices, techniques, and standards.

Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to develop and present technical presentations.

Capability to represent complex data in diagrams or through other techniques that communicate precise information to both business and technical staff.

Proven ability to understand the strategic and tactical approach to projects and handle multiple projects concurrently.

Independently demonstrate proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Skype/Lync), Adobe Acrobat, and applications for access to the world wide web including Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Active Secret DoD Clearance or the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance at the required level - NO Exceptions

U.S. Citizenship required for U.S. Government entity.

AND One of the following combinations of education/experience:

MA/MS degree, and twelve (12) years of experience in the respective technical/professional discipline being performed, five (5) years of which must be in the DoD.

BA/BS, fifteen (15) years of experience in the respective technical/professional discipline being performed, five (5) of which must be in the DoD.

HSD/GED, twenty (20) years of directly related experience with proper certifications as described in the Functionally Aligned Job Descriptions, five (5) of which must be in the DoD.
