The Arboretum Horticulture and Engagement Coordinator plays a vital role in supporting the horticultural and educational mission of the Chadwick Arboretum and Learning Gardens. Under the supervision of the Director, this position manages plant care and greenhouse operations, coordinates volunteers and student interns, and supports a wide range of outreach and engagement activities that showcase the work of CFAES.
Key Responsibilities
Manage and assist with horticultural tasks including plant propagation, maintenance, and greenhouse operations.
Coordinate and supervise volunteers, interns, and staff in garden and greenhouse activities.
Support administrative functions such as purchasing, record-keeping, and inventory management.
Procure plant materials, fertilizers, chemicals, and other supplies for garden maintenance.
Assist with the upkeep of named gardens, learning gardens, and natural areas.
Operate and maintain horticultural equipment and tools.
Support the internship program by advising students, coordinating educational experiences, and facilitating field trips and site visits.
Assist with formal classes, Extension programs, outreach events, tours, and student activities.
Develop and lead age-appropriate tours and engagement opportunities on topics such as pollinators, foraging, and medicinal plants.
Create educational and wayfinding signage to highlight projects and best practices.
Collaborate with other CFAES units including horticulture, environmental and natural resources, turfgrass, and the Olentangy River Wetlands facility.
Maintain effective communication with faculty, staff, students, industry professionals, and the public.
Minimum Required Qualifications
High School diploma or GED.
0 years of relevant experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
1–2 years of relevant experience in horticulture, plant science, or a related field.
Experience in public garden or arboretum settings.
Familiarity with educational programming and community engagement.
Knowledge of sustainable gardening practices and native plant species.
Proficiency in using hand and power tools for garden maintenance.
Experience coordinating volunteers or student workers.
Additional Information:
This job profile is a Farm Coordinator 1 (T1 level) position on the career roadmap and is a classified civil service position which has probationary period.
The salary paid to an individual will vary based on multiple factors, including but not limit to, education, years of experience, internal equity, etc.
