Job Description
At HOPESS, we know the first few days — and the second week — are when most clients feel the urge to leave. That’s when they need someone who’s been there. We’re hiring a Peer Support Specialist whose main job is to keep clients engaged and supported through those critical early moments. You’ll help residents feel seen, heard, and connected — not just to the program, but to the people in it.
Your number one responsibility will be preventing AFA/AMA discharges. You’ll do that by being present, checking in with new residents daily, stepping in when someone’s struggling, and making sure the clinical team stays in the loop. This role is about building a culture where we all understand: keeping clients in the program means saving lives.
We’re looking for someone whose recovery is rooted in purpose — whether that’s personal growth, faith, or a calling to help others. What matters most is your ability to meet people where they are, build trust, and show up when it counts.
Responsibilities:
Build real, trusting relationships with all new admissions — especially those in their first 14 days
Be visibly present in the lobby and high-traffic areas throughout the day
Conduct informal rounds, offering emotional support and connection
Keep a daily list of high-risk or disengaged residents, check in with them personally, and communicate concerns with the clinical team
Intervene when a resident is preparing to leave AMA or AFA and guide them back into the program with empathy and encouragement
Attend clinical rounds to stay updated and offer peer insight
Assist in creating a culture where every staff member understands that saving clients from leaving = saving lives
Support optional spiritual activities or prayer when invited by residents
Your Success Will Be Measured By:
Reductions in early discharges (AMA/AFA)
Consistent engagement with at-risk residents
Timely updates and collaboration with clinical staff
Overall contribution to a culture of retention and recovery
Requirements:
Lived experience in recovery (minimum 1 year sobriety)
Comfortable being visible, approachable, and proactive
Excellent listener with a heart for service and resilience
Peer Support Certification (or willing to obtain)
Open to supporting clients from all backgrounds with compassion and respect
Schedule & Pay:
Full-time, with some weekends or evenings required
Hourly pay based on experience, plus potential benefitsCompany Description
