Position Summary

The Gillings School of Global Public Health – the top public school of public health in the nation – offers a variety of professional Master of Public Health ( MPH ) concentrations under the schoolwide MPH program. The MPH is the cornerstone of education in public health, preparing graduates for expanded roles in the 21st century. MPH degrees will ground students in a rigorous, integrated, public health core and focus on specialized skill building in a defined area of expertise via concentrations. The MPH will also emphasize experiential learning that provides opportunities for applying and integrating concepts, skills, and interdisciplinary content. The Gillings MPH includes quality residential and online programs offered in a variety of concentration areas relevant to today’s public health needs. These offerings are designed to meet the needs of a diverse student body and to fuel the public health workforce. Central to Gillings MPH is the MPH Core, an foundational interdisciplinary first-year set of core courses driven by the latest recommendations from the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health ( ASPPH ) and the Council on Education for Public Health ( CEPH ). The Gillings School has expanded its online offerings to add MPH@UNC, delivered with support from digital educational partner 2U . MPH@UNC is a flexible degree option for those with professional or personal constraints limiting participation in a residential program in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Students learn from UNC lead faculty and section instructors through a unique blend of highly interactive online learning in small-group virtual classroom setting. MPH@UNC students must meet the same selective admissions criteria as the residential programs and upon graduation, earn an identical diploma. Section instructors for MPH@UNC will be responsible for teaching core or concentration courses. Section instructors teach live, online, synchronous class sessions once each week for 13 weeks. The MPH@UNC term is 14 weeks long with 13 weeks of content. The program recognizes some holidays and well-being days that are equal to one week off during the term. Classes are typically scheduled for weekday evenings. Key responsibilities of the section instructor include: * Facilitating weekly live sessions in which the class discusses and applies learning from self-paced modules developed by lead faculty. * Grading assessments and providing verbal and written feedback to students as appropriate. * Responding to student questions and issues related to the course. * Maintaining regular communications with lead faculty and the coordinator for MPH@UNC about students’ experiences, potential barriers, ideas for enhancement, etc. Section instructors will follow a standardized course syllabus, class plan, and use pre-developed instructional materials created by lead faculty for each course. Instructors will effectively engage class members in discussions during live class sessions, bringing their unique background and expertise to the course experience by helping students apply their new knowledge to relevant, real-world problems. Section instructors will provide feedback on and grade student work, while also supporting student learning by establishing and communicating regular office hours and responding to student issues and questions within forty-eight business hours. Section instructor is responsible for maintaining reliable access to the learning management system (e.g., meeting technical specifications and reliable high-speed internet access).
