POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Organization: Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP)

Position: Deputy Chief Development Officer (Deputy CDO)

Salary Range: $150,000 - $170,000 (commensurate with experience)

Reports to: Chief Development Officer

Location: Washington, DC

Work Arrangement: Hybrid – in-office Tuesdays and Wednesdays weekly; first Thursday of the month

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) is a nonpartisan research and policy institute that advances federal and state policies to help build a nation where everyone — regardless of income, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, ZIP code, immigration status, or disability status — has the resources they need to thrive and share in the nation’s prosperity.

CBPP combines rigorous research and analysis, strategic communications, and effective advocacy to shape debates, affect policy, and inform effective implementation both nationally and in states. It works closely with a broad set of national, state, and community organizations to design and advance policies that promote economic justice; improve health; broaden opportunity in areas like housing, health care, employment, and education; and lower structural barriers for people of color and others in communities that continue to face systemic barriers to opportunity. CBPP promotes policies that will build a more equitable nation and fair tax policies that can support these gains over the long term. CBPP also shows the harmful impacts of policies and proposals that would deepen poverty, widen disparities, and worsen health outcomes.

CBPP has a staff of more than 150, and an annual budget near $50 million, including over $10 million in regranting funds to its partner organizations.

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) is seeking a dynamic and strategic Deputy Chief Development Officer (Deputy CDO) to help drive our mission: building a nation where everyone—regardless of income, race, or zip code—has the resources they need to thrive.

As a senior leader on our nine-person Development team, the Deputy CDO will play a critical role in expanding and deepening CBPP’s philanthropic partnerships. You will partner closely with our Chief Development Officer to design and execute a strategic fundraising approach that fuels our nationally respected work on economic and racial justice.

This is a unique opportunity for a relationship-driven, equity-centered fundraiser who thrives on building new donor relationships, coaching a talented team, and shaping strategy to drive lasting impact. You’ll lead efforts to cultivate new funders, including individuals, foundations, and philanthropic institutions—and help strengthen our internal systems, cross-team collaboration, and donor engagement.

What You’ll Do

Develop and execute growth strategies to secure funding aligned with CBPP’s organizational priorities.

Lead new funder engagement and cultivation efforts, expanding CBPP’s base of philanthropic partners.

Collaborate with the CDO to create a responsive donor engagement plan that deepens relationships with current supporters and inspires new ones.

Manage, mentor, and support two team members: the Deputy Director of Individual Giving and the Manager of Development.

Serve as a strategic partner to policy, finance, and executive teams, aligning internal stakeholders around shared fundraising goals.

Lead the preparation of high-impact proposals, reports, and donor communications that connect our work to funder values and priorities.

Use data-driven tools and CRM platforms (e.g., Salesforce) to track donor activity, improve processes, and guide team decisions.

Champion inclusive fundraising practices that reflect CBPP’s ongoing commitment to racial equity and economic justice.

About You

You’re a collaborative, mission-driven development professional who’s excited by both vision and execution. You bring:

10+ years of experience in nonprofit or policy-driven fundraising, with a strong track record securing funding from foundations, individuals, and institutions.

Skill and confidence in managing a team, coaching talent, and fostering a culture of accountability and support.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling messaging for philanthropic audiences.

Experience using tools like prospect research, wealth screening, or donor mapping to inform cultivation strategies.

Comfort using CRM systems (Salesforce is a plus) and analyzing performance data to guide decisions.

Deep commitment to CBPP’s mission and a strong equity lens in your work.

A spirit of curiosity, flexibility, and collaboration, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment.

Willingness to travel up to 25% of the time to engage donors and represent CBPP externally.
