About UCR
UCR (Under Control Robotics) builds multipurpose robots to support human workers in the world's toughest jobs—turning dangerous work from a necessity into a choice. Our work demands reliability, robustness, and readiness for the unexpected—on time, every time. We're assembling a mission-driven team focused on delivering real impact in heavy industry, from construction and mining to energy. If you're driven to build rugged, reliable products that solve real-world problems, we'd love to talk.
Position Overview
At UCR, building robots is a team sport. As a founding electro-mechanical engineer, you'll take ownership and lead the development of advanced electro-mechanical systems powering multipurpose humanoid robots in the real world. You'll design, build, document, and maintain state of the art hardware systems that enable robots to move freely across diverse environments and perform useful manipulation tasks.
Responsibilities
Drive design and development of mechanical systems across the robot
Use your technical knowledge to execute on structural sizing, mechanism design, hardware fabrication, and testing to deliver results on projects
Partner with peer design owners such as interfacing systems and or avionics and structures to rapidly deliver integrated systems and subsystems on the robots
Conduct design reviews with stakeholders and customers
Manage on-site integration teams and implement integration feedback into the design
Diagnose and operate robot mechanisms during development and deployed operations
Perform engineering hand calculations and analysis to size structures and mechanisms
Create detailed models and engineering prints in SolidWorks
Build and prototype systems in the lab
Collaborate with cross-disciplinary engineering teams to drive software-hardware co-design
Design and build test equipment for both subsystem and complete system tests
Requirements
4+ years of total experience in one or more of the following: involvement with an outside of the classroom project designing and building mechanical structures; academic research on mechanical structures; professional experience designing and analyzing mechanical structures
Experience building hardware or have a passion for contributing to a work product that operates in the real world
Demonstrated rapid growth. You've held successive positions of increasing responsibility within an organization, were able to get yourself up to speed at a heroic pace, and accomplished something meaningfully difficult early in your career
Experience using a high-end CAD software design package (e.g. NX, CATIA, Solidworks, etc.) SolidWorks Preferred
Experience designing and validating large metallic structures and or mechanisms
Ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
Understanding of design considerations including design for rapid manufacturability, design of tests etc.
Ability to work in a collaborative team environment with engineers, technicians, and leaders
Nice to Have
Ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
Experience working in a production facility with equipment and machinery
Experience managing large CAD assembly models and drawings
Experience with finite element analysis
Experience designing and fabricating mass efficient structures
Experience designing and testing mechanisms
Experience design and specification of motors and actuators
Strong understanding and application of GD&T
