Database Administrator - Azure SQL & Microsoft Dataverse

Job Summary:
McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Database Administrator to manage and optimize our critical data infrastructure, with a strong focus on Azure SQL Database and Microsoft Dataverse. The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in leveraging APIs and modern integration technologies to connect disparate data sources, coupled with a proven ability to utilize Power BI and other analytical tools for data-driven insights. This role requires a proactive individual with a strong understanding of database optimization, scripting, and automation techniques to ensure the performance, security, and reliability of our data assets. Experience working with architectural space data or health system data is a significant plus.
Responsibilities:
Database Management & Administration:
o Administer and maintain Azure SQL Databases, ensuring high availability, performance, security, and integrity.
o Manage and maintain Microsoft Dataverse environments, including entity creation, relationship management, security configuration, and solution deployment.
o Perform database backups, restores, and recovery procedures.
o Implement and maintain database security measures, including user access control, encryption, and auditing.
o Monitor database performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement optimization strategies.
o Troubleshoot and resolve database-related issues in a timely and efficient manner.
Data Integration & Connectivity:
o Design, develop, and implement data integration solutions using APIs (e.g., REST, SOAP), Azure Data Factory, Logic Apps, or other relevant technologies to connect various data sources.
o Develop and maintain data pipelines to ensure seamless data flow between Azure SQL, Microsoft Dataverse, and other systems.
o Collaborate with application development teams to design and implement efficient data access patterns.
Analytics & Reporting Support:
o Support the development and maintenance of Power BI dashboards and reports, ensuring data accuracy and performance.
o Collaborate with business users and analysts to understand reporting requirements and provide data solutions.
o Familiarity with other analytical tools and techniques for data exploration and visualization.
Database Optimization & Performance Tuning:
o Analyze query performance and implement indexing strategies, query optimization techniques, and database configuration changes to improve efficiency.
o Conduct performance testing and identify areas for improvement.
o Implement and maintain database partitioning and archiving strategies as needed.
Scripting & Automation:
o Develop and maintain scripts (e.g., T-SQL, PowerShell, Python) to automate routine database tasks, deployments, and monitoring processes.
o Implement infrastructure-as-code (IaC) principles for database provisioning and management.
Architecture & Design:
o Participate in the design and implementation of database solutions that meet business requirements and align with best practices.
o Contribute to the development of data models and database schemas.
o Stay current with emerging database technologies and trends, particularly within the Microsoft Azure ecosystem.
Documentation & Standards:
o Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for database configurations, processes, and procedures.
o Adhere to established data governance policies and standards.
Collaboration & Communication:
o Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including developers, analysts, and business stakeholders.
o Communicate technical information clearly and concisely to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Database Administrator.
Extensive experience managing and administering Azure SQL Databases, including performance tuning, security, and high availability configurations.
Strong experience with Microsoft Dataverse, including entity modeling, security roles, business rules, and solution management.
Proven experience in utilizing APIs (REST, SOAP) and other modern data integration technologies (e.g., Azure Data Factory, Logic Apps) to connect and integrate data from various sources.
Solid understanding and practical experience with Power BI or other data visualization and analytical tools.
Proficiency in database optimization techniques, including indexing, query tuning, and performance monitoring.
Strong scripting skills in T-SQL, PowerShell, and/or Python for automation and database management tasks.
Experience with database design principles and data modeling.
Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.
Strong communication and collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications (Plus):
Experience working with architectural space data (e.g., BIM, CAD data, spatial databases).
Experience working with health system data (e.g., EHR/EMR systems, HL7, FHIR).
Experience with other Azure data services (e.g., Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Data Lake Storage).
Familiarity with DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines for database deployments.
Relevant Microsoft certifications (e.g., Azure Database Administrator Associate).
