Position Summary:
The Senior Extrusion Technician is responsible for independently operating and maintaining complex polymer extrusion lines used in the production of high-performance medical-grade tubing. This role supports both large-scale manufacturing and research and development initiatives, working in strict alignment with ISO 9001 standards, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and APTYX's robust quality management systems.
You will play a hands-on role in producing technically advanced tubing used in life-saving medical devices-where precision, consistency, and traceability are non-negotiable.Extrusion Technician Key Responsibilities:
Set up, operate, and troubleshoot polymer extrusion equipment used to manufacture single-lumen, multi-lumen, taper, and co-extruded tubing for Class II and III medical devices.
Own all aspects of assigned extrusion lines including mechanical setup, tool changes, calibration, performance tuning, tear-down, and preventive maintenance.
Ensure production output meets dimensional, visual, and functional specifications according to work instructions, quality documents, and engineering drawings.
Collaborate cross-functionally with Quality, Engineering, and R&D teams to transition new products from development to scalable production.
Provide timely production support for prototypes, process validation, and product scale-up activities.
Maintain strict control and documentation of raw materials and extrusion process parameters to support full lot traceability and regulatory compliance.
Complete and review batch records, work orders, and deviation reports accurately and in real-time to uphold FDA and ISO 9001 documentation standards.
Participate in daily line audits and contribute to ongoing process improvements using Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma tools.Extrusion Technician Required Qualifications:
2-5 years of hands-on extrusion experience, preferably in a medical device manufacturing or cleanroom environment.
Proven experience with medical-grade thermoplastics including Pebax, Nylon, Polyurethane, Polyethylene, and related materials.
Working knowledge of ADR (Area Draw Ratio), DDR (Direct Draw Ratio), and DRB/DDB (Draw Ratio Balance) calculations and their application in tooling and line setup.
Ability to select, assemble, and adjust extrusion tooling based on tubing specifications, material properties, and historical processing data.
Familiarity with vacuum sizing, open tank sizing, pressure coating, and tube-on coating techniques.
Strong written and verbal communication skills with attention to documentation accuracy.
High level of accountability, initiative, and problem-solving skills.Extrusion Technician Desirable Knowledge (or Willingness to Learn):
Basic understanding of polymer behavior, including the impact of viscosity, velocity, and residual moisture on extrusion profiles.
Exposure to process instrumentation and ability to interpret data for real-time optimization.
Knowledge of tooling design principles for multi-lumen extrusions and high-precision geometries.
