Health Department: Part-time Vector Control Night Driver

Description

Incumbent serves as Vector Control Night Driver for the Vigo County Health Department, responsible for applying insecticide to designated areas to protect the County from bacterial and viral transmitted by mosquitoes, ticks and fleas.

Examples of Duties

Drives a pickup truck and sprays for adult mosquitoes in designated areas, adhering to standard safety procedures and remaining in contact with supervisor at all times.

Ensures compliance with Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act [FIFRA] and the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System [NPDES] permit program.

Records nightly events and/or problems, such as equipment failure, and maintains log of public complaints/concerns.

Regularly checks vehicle and equipment to ensure proper fluid levels and mechanical functions.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

High school diploma or GED.

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Ability to meet all department hiring requirements, including passage of a drug test.

Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of Department safety policies and procedures, including OSHA guidelines.

Working knowledge of and ability to safely operate assigned Department vehicles and equipment and complete related maintenance and safety measures.

Ability to physically perform assigned duties, including driving for long periods, reaching, close/far vision, color/depth perception, hearing sounds, and handling/grasping/fingering objects.

Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.

Ability to comply with all employer and Department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.

Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of Department information and records according to state requirements.

Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with irate/disgruntled persons.

Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out oral and written instructions and present findings in oral or written form.

Ability to apply knowledge of people and locations, plan/layout work assignments, and complete required paperwork.

Ability to read/interpret detailed road maps, instructions, technical manuals, instruments, gauges, and dials.

Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment.

Ability to occasionally work extended hours.

Possession of a valid Indiana driver's license and a demonstrated safe driving record.

Supplemental Information

Other relevant information:

Ability to drive 1/2 ton pick-up truck on a given 40 mile route at 10 MPH five nights a week depending on weather. [From end of May to mid October]

Ability to follow written and oral detailed instructions and apply pesticides in accordance with instructions.

Incumbent reports directly to Vector Control Supervisor.

Incumbent performs majority of duties in a pickup truck and is regularly exposed to normal hazards associated with vector control, including traffic, excessive noise, moving parts, dirt, dust, toxic chemicals, vehicle fumes, working in confined areas, and inclement weather. Safety precautions must be followed at all times to avoid injury to self others and protective gear must be worn according to Department policy. Incumbent occasionally works extended hours.

Incumbent's duties involve driving for long periods, reaching, close/far vision, color/depth perception, handling/grasping/fingering objects, and hearing sounds.
