Job Title: Project Engineer - Highway / Transportation (Hybrid)

Location: Boston, Massachusetts (Hybrid; also open to Andover, Worcester, or Yarmouth)Position Overview:We are seeking an experienced Project Engineer to join our growing Highway/Transportation Engineering team. This role involves working on a diverse range of infrastructure projects including roadway and intersection reconstructions, shared-use paths, and bicycle/pedestrian facilities for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), municipalities, and state agencies.As a key contributor, you will prepare engineering designs and studies for various transportation facilities and support or lead projects based on complexity and scale. You will collaborate with internal teams, interact directly with clients, and play a critical role in building safe, resilient, and sustainable infrastructure across Massachusetts.Key Responsibilities:
Design roadways, intersections, parking lots, and multi-use paths, including horizontal and vertical alignments, grading, and drainage systems
Develop detailed construction plan sets, specifications, and cost estimates
Perform quantity takeoffs and support preparation of bidding documents
Apply MassDOT design standards and other relevant agency guidelines
Collaborate closely with senior project managers, design teams, and clients
Participate in project meetings, provide technical insights, and assist in project strategy and planning
Support or manage multiple projects depending on complexity and experience levelRequired Qualifications (Must-Haves / Non-Negotiables):
B.S. in Civil Engineering
4-10 years of experience in transportation/highway engineering
EIT certification, or the ability to obtain it within 6 months of hire
Strong proficiency in AutoCAD/Civil 3D
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Highly motivated with a strong work ethic and team-oriented mindsetPreferred Qualifications:
PE license (Professional Engineer) is a strong plus
Experience working with MassDOT Design Standards
Familiarity with engineering software tools such as:
SignCAD, ParkCAD
HydroCAD, HEC-RAS, HY-8
ArcGIS, Bluebeam, Microsoft Project
Experience preparing transportation project documentation for state or municipal clientsKey Skills:
Technical Design Proficiency - from conceptual layouts to final construction documents
Problem-Solving - ability to interpret data and propose practical, sustainable design solutions
Project Coordination - capable of juggling multiple priorities and communicating effectively with multidisciplinary teams
Client Engagement - professionalism in presenting and collaborating with public agencies and stakeholders
