Job Description

Why Join Us?

At Porter, we do things differently. While other fabricators may be cutthroat, we truly care about our people. Over the last five years, we’ve grown significantly, but we’ve held onto our family-oriented culture. Our leadership is accessible—anyone can talk to Ben, and even the president is available. We treat our employees "like gold" and make sure no one is mistreated. If issues arise, we address them fast. If you're looking for a company that values and invests in its team, this is the place for you.

Job Summary:

As a Fitter, you will be responsible for assembling, fitting, and welding structural, plate, and mechanical materials according to blueprint dimensions. You’ll be working closely with welders to ensure proper layout and assembly.

Key Responsibilities:

Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and work orders.

Plan and execute the fitting operation according to detailed drawings.

Lay out and position materials, assembling components in proper relationships.

Mark where plates will be placed, tack components in place, and pass them to welders.

Perform minor layout and double-check assembly versus drawings.

Work alongside welders to finalize assemblies.

Move materials as needed within the shop.

Weld a variety of materials using different techniques when required.

Qualifications:

Proficiency in blueprint reading.

Experience working with structural components like stairs, handrails, guardrails, beams, and columns.

Familiarity with base plates and shear connections for structural welding.

AWS D1.1 certification required.

High school diploma or equivalent.

At least five years of experience preferred.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

Must be able to stand and walk throughout the shop for prolonged periods.

Ability to work in an unconditioned environment.

Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds.

Work Schedule & Benefits:

Monday - Friday, 6 AM - 5 PM with a one-hour lunch (50-hour weeks).

Every other Saturday: 8-hour shifts (if needed).

Overtime pay at time and a half.

Benefits include medical (60 days after hire), dental, life insurance, and optional additional coverage.

401k match (3% dollar-for-dollar) after 90 days.

Who We're Looking For:

We need someone who has experience in fitting—not just welding. If you have experience with handrails, guardrails, and stairs, that’s a huge plus, as it makes transitioning to structural work easier. Our ideal candidate is someone who is detail-oriented, enjoys hands-on work, and wants to grow in a supportive environment.

Serving the Southeast since 1983, Porter Steel is a leader in structural & miscellaneous fabrication.
