Position Title: Legal Assistant

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Pay Range: $18–$26 per hour (Depending on Qualifications)

Location: Shawnee County District Attorney’s Office – Topeka, Kansas

Position Summary:

The Shawnee County District Attorney’s Office is seeking a reliable and detail-oriented Legal Assistant to support prosecutors in the preparation and management of criminal cases. This position requires a high level of organization, professionalism, and discretion, as well as the ability to work efficiently in a team-driven, fast-paced legal environment. Legal Assistants serve a vital role in case progression, file maintenance, and communication with law enforcement, victims, and court staff.

Primary Responsibilities:

· Maintain physical and electronic case files in accordance with office procedures

· Communicate with attorneys, law enforcement, victims, witnesses

· Track deadlines, court settings, and plea due dates

· Assist with trial preparation, including organizing exhibits and witness lists

· Accurately enter and update data in the case management system

· Schedule meetings, prepare correspondence, and handle general clerical duties

· Operate standard office equipment and adhere to confidentiality standards

· Perform other duties as assigned to support prosecutorial functions

Minimum Qualifications:

· At least one year of clerical, legal assistant, or administrative support experience

· Strong grammar, typing, and proofreading skills

· Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel)

· Ability to follow legal procedures and maintain confidentiality

· Ability to manage multiple deadlines and shifting priorities

· Must pass a criminal background check

Preferred Qualifications:

· Bachelor’s degree or completion of a legal assistant or paralegal program

· Experience in a prosecutor’s office, law firm, or legal services agency

· Familiarity with legal terminology and criminal case workflow

· Prior use of legal case management or court e-filing systems

Work Schedule:

This is a full-time, in-office position. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
