Houstonia is looking for a creative, plugged-in News & City Life Editor who can tell unique stories about Houston, its people, and its culture. This editor writes most of the content for the News & City Life section, assigns stories to freelancers as needed, and occasionally contributes to other verticals. Houstonia operates as a daily digital outlet and a quarterly print magazine.

What you’ll do
Ideate and pitch stories that go beyond the news of the day, carefully choosing those that will resonate with Houstonia readers and add to the conversation
Write digital stories on a weekly basis, from shorter news-you-can-use and service pieces to profiles and longer features
Write stories for the quarterly print magazine, which can include topics outside the editor’s main beat, such as travel and the arts
Write a weekly newsletter every Monday
Assign and edit freelancer stories
Build articles in the CMS
Proof galleys for the print magazine
Coordinate with the art director on the visual plan for all stories
Occasionally coordinate with the director of digital engagement on promotion plans for stories
Attend weekly meetings
Other responsibilities as needed
Who you are
A journalist with at least two years of experience at an editorial publication
A creative and original thinker who loves to experiment
Passionate about local news
Familiar with CMS and project management tools
Familiar with data analytics tools like Looker, Chartbeat, and Google Analytics
Knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style is a plus
This role reports to the Editor in Chief and does not have any direct reports. It is a hybrid position based in Houston, Texas. The expected annual salary is between $55,000 and $62,000. This position is full-time with benefits, including medical, vision, dental, 401K retirement with company match, paid vacation, volunteer days, and paid parental leave.
