The Organization

Established in 1922, the Port serves the community by promoting trade, supporting family-wage jobs, and improving the environment. Today, more than 5,000 jobs and nearly $715.5 million in economic activity in Thurston County depend on the Port of Olympia. The Port of Olympia is governed by an elected Commission, which sets policies and strategic direction for the organization. The Commission appoints the Port’s Executive Director, who is responsible for the ongoing management of the Port’s staff, operations, budget, enterprises, and facilities. The Position

The Harbor Operations Assistant is responsible for the day-to-day operation, Fuel dock operations, dock & parking lot audits, customer service, maintenance, repairs, and coordination of boating-related facilities, activities, and equipment, as well as special projects as assigned.

Examples of Duties

Perform daily inspections of all docks, buildings, tenant and guest vessels, parking lots, parks, and other common areas.

Assists with repairs of malfunctioning equipment, gates, dockside utility systems, doors, lights, machinery, and plumbing systems.

Perform vessel, slip, dinghy dock, dry storage lot, and parking audits.

Assist in the coordination of guest boater activities, docking, securing of vessels, collection of fees, and tariffs payable to the port, set up and operating special events, and port security functions as needed.

Enforce Port rules, regulations, best management practices, and tariff provisions.

Performs daily cleaning of docks, office, and equipment as necessary.

Work with the Marina office for event set up, incoming guest reservations, audit reports, and other duties as assigned.

Performs Fuel Dock operations instructing boaters in proper fueling methods, dispensing of fuel products, and collecting payments when assigned.

Assist with Swantown dock maintenance and landscaping/property maintenance as directed.

Perform general cleaning and maintenance activities to a variety of port facilities.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Basic computer skills as necessary to perform the requirements of the job.

Basic office equipment knowledge including 10-key, multiple phone lines, fax machine, printer, and copy machine.

Oral and written communication skills.

Initiative, analytical ability, and imagination to resolve problems and to promote the Port’s good public image.Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Ability to communicate courteously and professionally with customers and the general public.

Ability to readily detect mistakes and trace errors and omissions in an efficient and timely manner, solve practical problems, and juggle multiple tasks with interruptions.

Basic repair and maintenance skills.

Ability to work variable hours, weekends, and holidays as required by the demands of the job.

A valid Washington State driver's license.

Ability to lift, push, and pull 50 lbs.
