Ohio Holocaust and Genocide Education and Memorial Commission
The Ohio Holocaust and Genocide Memorial and Education Commission (OHGMEC) envisions an Ohio where Holocaust and genocide education is accessible to all Ohioans to build a more informed and engaged society. The Commission was legislated in Senate Bill 310, and its mandate was established in Ohio Revised Code 197.
Position Description:
OHGMEC's Executive Director performs senior-level managerial work administering the daily operations and activities of OHGMEC, with a focus on government relations with the Ohio elected officials. Work involves interacting with 15 Governor-appointed Commissioners; establishing strategic goals and objectives; developing guidelines, procedures, and policies; coordinating, prioritizing and evaluating OHGMEC activities; developing budget requests; and monitoring budget expenditures. The ED will plan, assign, and supervise the work of 2 full-time and 1 part-time employees.
This position and the Commission are supported by state funding through the Ohio History Connection. This position will be based out of Columbus and be required to travel as needed in the state of Ohio.
Essential Functions:
Leadership
Leads the advocacy work of the Commission, building relationships and developing educational platforms about the Commission's work to the Ohio General Assembly, Governor and cabinet, and elected officials statewide
Identify and motivate all stakeholders associated with the Commission to achieve the OHGMEC's mission.
Create and maintain an ethical and inspirational culture focused on strategic objectives, innovation, and fiscal responsibility.
Fiscal Management
Develop, review, and monitor the biennial budget of the Commission as legislated by the state of Ohio, including developing strategies for messaging Commission priorities to legislators
Advocates through testimony to Ohio General Assembly during hearings for biennial budget
Oversee expenditures and revenues and establish a system linking strategic and operational planning with the budget process.
Provide the Commissioners with timely and accurate financial reports and annual budgets in line with best accounting practices.
Recommend changes in the allocation of funds and personnel, as appropriate, to meet long-range program needs and to implement the priorities set by the Commission.
Operational Management
Provide day to day management, oversight and direction of operations and administration.
Hire, supervise and evaluate OHGMEC employees in the execution of their duties that reflect primary functional areas of the Commission.
Establish goals and objectives for staff; develop priorities and standards for achieving goals; and manage evaluation activities.
Work with the OHGMEC staff to develop, maintain, and monitor the use of guidelines, procedures, systems and resources to continuously increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the Commission's operations for external stakeholders.
Coordinate and manage OHGMEC meetings and provide information and support to OHGMEC at meetings and otherwise as directed.
Commissioner Relationships
Execute policies established by the Commission and provide leadership and guidance to the Commission in the formulation of policies including the governing of all phases of operation of the organization.
Schedule a min. of 6 Commission meetings/year, per ORC 197.05, and secure attendance commitments from a quorum of 8 voting Commissioners.
Assure the orderly conduct of the business of the Commission, including execution of meetings, setting of agendas, coordination of committee work, development of Commissioner leadership, and facilitation of Commissioner participation in statewide activities.
Execute all other duties as assigned by action of the Commission.
Community Relations
Establish and maintain working relationships with other Holocaust and genocide institutions and other appropriate organizations to connect, advise, and foster learning and collaboration.
Actively represent the Commission to the public at large, survivor communities, legislators, and other state officials.
Communicate the mission of OHGMEC effectively to external partners, stakeholders, and members of the public.
Represent the organization and act as an effective spokesperson in promoting the Commission and its unique mission to the media, to employees, and to current and potential stakeholders.
Represent the Commission at meetings, hearings, legislative sessions, conferences, and seminars.
Required Education & Experience
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in political science, history, communications, business or a closely related field;
Minimum five years' work experience in overseeing complex projects and/or programs;
Strong overall business acumen, specifically knowledge of operations and financial management, including budgeting and staff management;
Demonstrated work experience in supervising or leading a team to successfully achieve results, including experience establishing organizational and employee goals and expectations;
Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record; and
Required to travel up to 25% of the work period.
Desired Skills & Experience
Minimum five years' leadership or administrative position with a Commission, government agency, business or non-profit of comparable size and revenue;
Prior experience working with a board;
Experience with administrative best practices, including Human Resources, financial and project management.
Required Competencies:
Excellent leadership, management and strategic planning skills;
Effective verbal and written communication, human relations, interpersonal and organizational skills;
Knowledge of the Holocaust and genocides;
Knowledge of Ohio Governance structures, systems, and departments
Ability to establish and maintain successful working relationships with the Commission and staff and representatives from outside entities;
Skill in operating a personal computer with word processing, database and spreadsheet software;
Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet strict deadlines while maintaining extreme attention to detail;
Ability to plan, organize and work independently, as well as within a team environment;
Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion; and
Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality.
Work Environment:
This position is housed in a state government building across from the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus. This position attends and sometimes presents at conferences, meetings and workshops, requiring evening and weekend work hours. Applicants must be willing to travel, and overnight travel is often required. Travel typically requires driving, although some air travel is also expected.
Physical Demands:
Mostly sedentary in nature but may involve walking; standing; pulling and pushing; kneeling, stooping and bending; performing tasks requiring fine motor skills and coordination; and safely lifting and carrying items weighing up to 30 pounds.

Salary and Compensation:
