The Mission of the Effingham County Sheriff’s Jail Division is to ensure the safety and security of inmates and staff by maintaining a safe, sanitary, and secure environment. We will accomplish this mission by caring for, custody of, and controlling legally confined persons and providing ethical and humane treatment to those who are incarcerated.

The primary function of the Effingham County Sheriff’s Jail Division is to receive, process, and house individuals charged with felony and/or misdemeanor criminal violations. Individuals who cannot make bond remain in custody until they appear in court.

The secondary function is housing sentenced inmates. Some inmates are sentenced to serve time for misdemeanor offenses (less than 1 year) and remain in the county jail for the duration of their sentence. Inmates who receive a court sentence of more than 1 year are considered inmates of the Georgia Department of Corrections and remain in the county jail until a facility of the Georgia Department of Corrections may receive them.

Duties and responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to booking new intakes, releasing inmates leaving the facility, processing fingerprints, operating a computerized control tower while supervising inmate housing units, supervising meal distribution, supervising housekeeping and weekly hygiene supply distribution, moving inmates within the jail facility, conduct headcounts and security checks of the facility, complete various reports and forms as required.

Non-certified personnel will receive training for the two-week (80-hour) Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T) Jailer Certification within six months of hire.

We are an equal opportunity/drug-free workplace employer.
