Purpose of the Job

The purpose of this position is to perform either the layout and installation of traffic control markings, the fabrication of traffic control signs, using the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and Gila County Roadway Design Standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position does not supervise other employees.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

TIME SPENT

Selects traffic control signs, determines appropriate sign locations and installs signs on roadway easements, in accordance with MUTCD standards.

40%

Operates equipment such as squeeze and roller sheets applicators, electric/hydraulic die cutters and computerized graphic printer/plotter, to fabricate traffic control signs and street markers.

20%

Operates pavement-marking equipment such as paint stripers, to apply traffic control markings on roadways in accordance with work orders, blueprints, the MUTCD and Gila County Roadway Design Standards Manual.

10%

Interprets work orders and associated blueprints, draws sketches and calculates measurements to determine materials needed.

10%

Inspects roads for proper sign placement and categorizes signs into database.

10%

Sets up barricades for road closures in accordance with MUTCD standards.

10%

Performs other duties as assigned.

BUDGET RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no responsibility over any types of budget.

PROJECT RESPONSIBILITIES

This position does not have project responsibilities.

ORAL COMMUNICATION DUTIES

This position trains colleagues and explains County procedures or processes.

WRITTEN COMMUNICATION DUTIES

This position creates or edits documents, internal memos, emails, reports and formal letters.

INTERACTIONS WITH THE GENERAL PUBLIC

Interacts extensively with employees, customers, the general public, vendors, regulatory bodies, and other groups and/or individuals and Institutions over the telephone, by email, and/or in person.

INTERACTIONS SPECIFICALLY WITH CUSTOMERS

Consistently (More than 40% but less than 55% in a year)

Minimum Education/Directly Related Experience Required

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED

High School Diploma or GED with additional specialized or technical training courses.

MINIMUM YEARS OF DIRECTLY RELATED EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Three (3) years directly related experience; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

PROFESSIONAL CREDENTIALS REQUIRED

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License.

Engineering and technology; mathematics; cartography; Federal, State, Local laws, regulations and Statutes.

SKILLS REQUIRED

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Regularly sits to operate computers.

Regularly required to lift work related materials, equipment or tools up to 100 lbs.

Regularly requires dexterity for keyboard operation and for special machines.

Incumbents in this position may be required to walk to and from work sites, hike, stand and drive.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Incumbents in this position perform work in office environment; routinely spends time in road and heavy traffic areas and in automobile.

SAFETY RISK EXPOSURE

Incumbents in this position may be exposed to inclement weather; may be exposed to frequent bending, kneeling and lifting; may need to navigate through rough terrain; may be exposed to wildlife, domestic animals, reptiles, and/or insects. May be exposed to unsanitary conditions, fumes, moving mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals; the noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Employees may be called out to work off-shift in emergency situations.

PROTECTIVE GEAR & SAFETY MANUALS

Incumbents in this position are required to constantly follow written safety procedures and manuals relevant to the division or department. Requires the use of biosafety gear, industrial grade gloves, safety footwear, safety goggles, and special equipment or devices.
