Summary

The Canyon Police Department is committed to preserving the quality of life enjoyed by the citizens of Canyon, Texas. Police Officers serve the community through preventive patrols, enforcement of criminal and traffic laws, investigation of reported crimes and respond to calls-for-service.

Essential Job Functions

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs preventative patrols within an assigned geographical area of the city to prevent crime and protect citizens and their property. Conducts premise inspections of businesses, churches, schools, and parks. Conduct field interviews of suspicious persons and vehicles. Assist citizens in any way legally and physically possible.

Responds to calls-for-service. Enforces the law, making lawful arrests and searches. Drives and operates a patrol vehicle in a safe manner. Must be trainable in the maintenance and safe operation of essential police equipment.

Takes field notes and complete police reports, including arrest, offense, and accident report to document the incident. Must be skilled in report writing, including, spelling, and grammar.

Operate a laptop computer in order to access and use various software applications.

Enforces traffic laws making lawful traffic stops. Investigates and reports motor vehicle traffic collisions. Directs and controls traffic when necessary. Responsible for the safe and orderly movement of traffic.

Conducts preliminary and follow-up criminal investigations, including processing crime scenes. Interviews and interrogates persons related to criminal investigations. Takes affidavits and confessions. Executes arrest and search warrants.

Perform miscellaneous law enforcement duties, including: attending shift briefings; inspecting patrol vehicle and equipment to ensure operational readiness; interacting with other officers, dispatchers, detectives, and prosecutors regarding a criminal investigation; searching, handcuffing, and transporting prisoners to jail; and testifying in court

Other tasks as may be assigned.

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS:

Must meet all minimum licensing standards for a Texas Peace Officer as prescribed by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. Must have a valid Texas Driver's License.

Ability to write police reports. Must have good interpersonal and communication skills in order to effectively interact and communicate with the public. Must be able to work closely with others on a shift.Reasoning Abilities -

REASONING ABILITY:

Must be able to identify problems, gather data, establish facts, select a reasonable solution, and take decisive action. Must understand, develop, and practice officer safety skills. Must be able to define Probable Cause and be familiar with the 4th Amendment as it relates to arrest, search and seizures.Mathematical Skills -

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Must be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Exposure to extreme temperatures and smoke in fires, heat and humidity to work outside in the summer, occasional to frequent risk of physical abuse or assaults, noise exposure during firearms practice or training, rare exposure to caustic substances from chemical releases, or infectious diseases when handling prisoners or investigating drug or crime scenes. The individual will be required to wear body armor and at times wear specialized equipment such as rain gear or reflective traffic vests.
