Description:

The Department of Surgery, Division of Vascular & Endovascular Surgery, at Stony Brook University, seeks a Physician Assistant. The PA will assist physicians in our clinics as needed, including History and Physical on patients, recording patient medical information into EMR, and writing progress notes. Coordinating pre-hospital evaluations for admissions and other aspects of hospital care with surgeons. Providing follow-up, post-operative/post-procedural care under the authority of the attending physician and coordinating discharge planning.

The selected candidate will be responsible for patient care and for teaching medical students, residents and fellows as well as students from other healthcare professions. This position serves as a health care professional who, under the direction and supervision of a licensed physician, provides health care to patients.

Job Duties & Essential Functions:

Take patient history, perform a physical examination, and make an assessment and diagnosis based on this information, as well as, initiate, review, and revise treatment plans and record and present data in a manner meaningful to the supervising physician.

Provide patient care services to the medical practice.

Assist physician with interventional treatments, respond to incoming phone messages from patients, and make callbacks to patients reporting response to attending physician.

Make referrals to other healthcare providers and/or consult the physician for further definitive therapy.

Perform physical examinations; identify health problems based on findings.

Order and evaluate appropriate non-invasive diagnostic tests and procedures.

Instruct and counsel patients on health care, health maintenance, medical problems, treatment plans, nutrition or other related issues as appropriate.

Perform all other duties as assigned by management.

Take an active role in the education of patients, students, and staff through information sharing and case management meetings and demonstrate an understanding and acceptance of hospital policies and procedures, follow infection control practices and procedures for the safety of patients and co-workers.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Physician Assistant: NYS license and certification as a Physician Assistant. Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) from an accredited school of Physician Assistants. NCCPA certification, BLS certification, PALS certification, ACLS certification, and ATLS certification.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience working in a fast-paced medical practice. Ambulatory Experience. Experience with EMR. One (1) year of postgraduate experience in a vascular/endovascular surgery. Master's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) from AMA-approved Physician Assistant program (PA only).
