Job Description
The Controller oversees and manages all phases of the Accounting and Administration and supervises the accounting team which handles functional accounting, financial reporting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, 990 tax return, payroll, retirement compliance, and assists in cash flow and short-term investment management. The Controller will ensure that the NAIS has systems and policies and procedures in place to support an efficient close process; and works with external auditors and regulators to conduct periodic audits. The Controller will work closely with all other departments to ensure financial compliance with NAIS’ established policies and procedures.
Reports to: Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
Remote position with preference for candidates near our headquarters in DC.
Responsibilities:
Oversee financial reporting cycle, monthly closing process, general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and reporting systems ensuring accurate, timely financial reporting in compliance with GAAP standards.
Ensure compliance with tax and regulatory requirements. Prepare IRS Form 990. Oversee sales tax and other filing requirements across multiple states (eighteen and counting)
Supervise and mentor the accounting team - Accounts Receivable Manager, Accounts Payable and Payroll Manager, and Assistant Controller.
Develop and monitor internal controls to ensure they are working effectively and efficiently.
Manage the annual audit process activity and liaise with external auditors and regulators.
Monitor cash flow and optimize return on short-term cash and investments.
Support the CFO in annual budget development and monitoring.
Support the CFO financial modeling, reporting and analysis as needed.
Manage and optimize finance-related software systems (Sage Intacct, ADP, Salesforce (Revenue subledger), PN3 Accounts Payable Automation, and Ramp Spend Management system to streamline processes and continually improve speed and efficiency.
Other responsibilities related to financial operations and management as assigned.
Qualifications:
Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in managing similar non-profit organization.
Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA/MBA a plus.
Experience coordinating audit activities and managing financial reporting, analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll and regulatory compliance.
Experience supervising, coaching, and developing employees

Excellent data analysis and data handling skills (Excel, Pivot Tables, MS Power Query, MS Power BI).
Strong proficiency in Sage Intacct, payroll software (ADP experience preferred) Microsoft
