Position: Controller

Location: Lincoln, CA

Compensation: $115,000 - $140,000

We’re partnering with a fast-growing landscape supply company that's looking for an experienced Controller to lead their accounting department. This is a key leadership role responsible for financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, compliance, and operational oversight—including HR, sales tax, and fixed assets. The right candidate will have experience in the retail industry, be highly analytical, and enjoy working with a collaborative, tight-knit team. Responsibilities:

General Ledger Oversight: Maintain the integrity of the general ledger by overseeing accurate transaction posting, proper coding, and ensuring reconciliations are completed on time.

Financial Reporting & Analysis: Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow reports) in compliance with GAAP. Perform variance analysis and provide detailed insights for management.

Budgeting & Forecasting: Lead the preparation of budgets and forecasts, ensuring alignment with company goals. Track performance against projections and adjust forecasts as needed based on financial trends.

Sales Tax & Compliance: Oversee the preparation, filing, and compliance of sales tax returns across multiple jurisdictions. Monitor changes in tax law and ensure timely reporting.

Fixed Asset Management: Track, maintain, and reconcile the fixed asset ledger. Ensure proper capitalization, depreciation, and disposal procedures are followed.

Internal Controls & Audit Support: Design, implement, and monitor internal controls to ensure accuracy and prevent errors. Lead audit preparations and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.

Cost Management: Manage and report on costs related to retail operations, inventory, landscape projects, and equipment to ensure accurate financial tracking and cost control.

Accounts Payable & Receivable Management: Supervise AP/AR processes, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and proper reconciliation.

Payroll & HR Oversight: Oversee payroll processing, employee benefits administration, and collaborate with leadership on HR policies and compliance. Provide guidance on employee-related financial matters.

Team Leadership: Lead and mentor the accounting team, ensuring training on technical accounting, fostering a culture of collaboration, process improvement, and accountability.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (required).

5+ years of accounting/finance experience with at least 2 years in a leadership role (required).

Experience in the retail industry (required).

Demonstrated experience with sales tax preparation, fixed asset accounting, and HR/payroll oversight (required).

Proficient in Microsoft Excel and accounting software (QuickBooks experience preferred).

Solid understanding of GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting.

Strong leadership and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Excellent communication skills and a hands-on, team-oriented approach.

Experience in landscape, construction, or related industries (preferred).
