Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and organized Controller to oversee all accounting functions and activities. This pivotal role will manage and improve financial operations, ensuring accurate accounting, compliance, and strategic financial planning, with support for HR and audit functions. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of accounting principles and software, be self-directed, and possess excellent communication and prioritization skills.
Accounting Responsibilities
Accounting Operations: Manage daily, weekly, and monthly tasks (payroll, AP, AR, sales/use tax, cash flow)
Bookkeeping Policies & Systems: Implement and update accounting procedures, policies, and software
Financial Reporting: Prepare and close periods, post adjustments, and generate financial statements/reports (job cost, progress billings, WIP).
Job Cost Management: Oversee job cost accounting and collaborate on project schedules and expenses
Accounts Receivable & Payable: Supervise AR/AP, including collections, payments, and lien waivers
Cash Flow Management: Monitor balances and optimize cash flow.
Budgeting & Forecasting: Assist in budget formulation, expense monitoring, and revenue forecasting
Tax Planning & Compliance: Optimize tax positions with external firm and manage audit processes
Responsible for entering and maintaining project information including cost estimates, budgets and monthly budget adjustments
Support public accounting functions by providing necessary documentation for audits, reviews, compilations and tax return preparation
Utilize Foundation Software, UtilizeCore, and QuickBooks to manage financial transactions efficiently
Collaborate with team members to ensure timely completion of financial tasks and adherence to deadlines
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Strong leadership and supervisory skills with experience managing an accounting team
Proficient in account reconciliation and general ledger accounting practices.
Strong understanding of corporate and public accounting principles
Familiarity with financial concepts and their application in day-to-day operations
Familiarity with sales and use tax reporting requirements and filing of returns
Familiarity with construction-based practices including AIA billings, lien waivers and prevailing wage compliance and reporting
Proficiency in Excel, Word, and Office 365 applications including designing queries and use of complex Excel formulae
Ability to generate journal entries accurately and efficiently
Excellent attention to detail with strong organizational skills
Demonstrate effective analytical skills to handle routine situations
Proficient ability to handle multiple projects and priorities and maintaining flexibility in establishing priorities
Exercise sound judgment in dealing with highly sensitive and confidential information
Ability to convey essential information clearly and concisely in oral and written communications
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance is preferred.
CPA designation and public accounting experience is required.
Construction accounting experience (WIP, job costing, budget adjustment) is strongly preferred.
Minimum of 3 years related accounting experience dealing with month-end close process and the review, analysis, and interpretation of financial data and oversight of accounts receivable, accounts payable and payroll functions.
Notary a plus or willing to obtain notary
Experience in using Foundation Software and QuickBooks for transaction processing and financial reporting is preferred.
