General Position Description

Responsible for implementation of control strategies in automation systems that support the safety, quality, and cost objectives of process operations. Maintain automation systems in good working order to ensure highest level of operational availability.

Role and Responsibilities

Develop, test, and implement control configuration in automation systems that meet the safety, quality, and cost objectives of assigned work

Maintain automation systems in good working order to ensure highest level of operational availability.

Provides, in conjunction with other Automation Engineers and Automation Technicians, maintenance coverage 24 hours / day, 7 days / week, for automation systems at the site.

Performs automation system management with other Process Automation members. Includes: control software documentation, development of SOPs, operator training, and system backups.

Works as part of a team for the successful completion of major projects that require significant Process Automation involvement. This includes assisting in the design, development, and testing of control strategies under the guidance of another Automation Engineer or Automation Technician.

Develop a basic knowledge of process control theory including loop tuning, control schemes (PID, cascade, ratio, etc), and impact of control strategies on the process.

Familiar with reading and interpreting PID diagrams, SAMAs, loop sheets, and elementary drawings.

Stays current in automation system technology and control theory through literature study and formal training.

Meets regularly with supervisor or provides written reports to document the status of activities.

Completes other special projects as directed.Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree (B.S.) Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Automation/Engineering preferred.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form

Preferred Skills

A basic understanding of the pulp and paper or cogeneration processes.

Excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with people.

Experience and knowledge in automation, ideally using DeltaV or ABB.

Experience in troubleshooting issues to root cause.

Ability to schedule own tasks and handle all facets of assigned projects independently and with minimal supervision

Excellent analytical trouble shooting and computer skills.
