The Ohio State University College of Medicine and the Wexner Medical Center seek Director of Research to join the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Hospital Medicine Academic rank and track commensurate with academic record and experience.

Position Overview

The Ohio State University College of Medicine's Division of Hospital Medicine is seeking an exceptional scholar to develop a program recognizable at the national level within the sub-specialty of Hospital Medicine. We are currently recruiting for a Director of Research to help lead the division in expanding its research infrastructure to amplify its commitment to health services, quality improvement, operational excellence, and education. The duties and responsibilities of this committed leader include: research leadership, conduct research, teaching and mentoring. The position is on the tenure-track, with rank and salary commensurate with education and experience. The successful candidate will have maintained an externally funded and independent research program with impact in or implications for Internal Medicine. Demonstrated experience as a research mentor is required. Expertise in research administration is desired, but not mandatory.

Department/Division Overview

The Division of Hospital Medicine at The Ohio State University College of Medicine is dedicated to the health and well-being of our patients, our division team members and The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center community. Our hospitalists are internal medicine physicians whose complete focus is to care for patients during their stay in the hospital. Our faculty delivers the highest quality evidence-based care through an interdisciplinary approach. We are a team of more than 170 faculty and staff members who account for over 16,000 admissions and over 149,000 patient encounters at our 7 hospitals. In addition, as part of one of the nation's top-ranked medical centers, the Division of Hospital Medicine has access to nationally and internationally recognized subspecialists, comprehensive cancer care and additional support services.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Director of Research will develop, implement, and monitor a research strategic plan within the Division of Hospital Medicine. They will serve as a resource for research methodology, research project planning, and champion a culture of discovery. This individual will mentor faculty, trainees and other students to ensure sound project planning, execution, data analysis, and publication of results. She or he will work closely with faculty to develop research plans and proposals with an emphasis on future external funding through the identification of funding sources, grant workshops, and collaborative research opportunities. This individual will also provide assistance in the: 1) management of research budgets and research conflicts; 2) oversight of research staff; and 3) development, maintenance, and circulation of research reports. Service on key divisional committees is expected, likely will serve on department or institutional committees as well.

Requirements

Applicants must have:

An MD, DO, MBBS, or equivalent degree with formal training or credentials in a relevant discipline.

Ability to obtain full medical license in the state of Ohio

An actively funded research program in basic, translational, clinical or health services research designed to directly or indirectly improve the practice of medicine

A record of scholarly achievement and funding capabilities appropriate to the applicant's seniority and professional experience.

Experience in research mentorship

Exceptional organizational and communication skills for work in an interdisciplinary department.

High productivity in regards to peer-reviewed publications and presentations

Demonstrated ability to build collaborative research relationships at local level, and at Regional or National level

Current journal editor or experience on editorial board

Qualifications for an academic appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor rank PhD, MPH or equivalent experience preferred

Faculty Defined

Clinical faculty (regardless of rank) - Persons with titles of assistant professor-clinical, associate professor-clinical and professor-clinical. These faculty will have earned a doctor of medicine (MD), doctorate (PhD) or other terminal degree in the relevant field. Clinical faculty members are not eligible for tenure and are appointed for terms of three to five years. They may be reappointed to successive terms. Their principal career focus is the delivery of exemplary clinical care, and may include teaching, and/or research.

Tenure-Track faculty (regardless of rank) - Persons with the titles of assistant professor, associate professor, or professor who are eligible for tenure or who have obtained tenure. These faculty will have earned a doctorate (PhD), Doctor of Medicine (MD) or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study. Their primary career focus centers on research, service, and teaching. Tenure-track faculty with MD or MD/PhD degrees may also be involved in clinical care.

Research Faculty (regardless of rank) - Persons with the titles of research assistant professor, research associate professor, or research professor. These faculty will have earned a doctorate (PhD) or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study. Research faculty members are not eligible for tenure and are appointed for terms of one to five years. Their principal career focus is research.
