Program Coordinator

Department: Cultural Enrichment - Library Services

Supervisor: Director, Cultural Enrichment

Schedule: Monday 11-8 first Monday of the month, 8:30-5 2-4th Monday; Tuesday- Friday 8:30-5

Status: Full Time with Benefits

An employee in this position is responsible for planning, organizing, promoting and executing public library programs and services. With an emphasis on youth, their families and caregivers, and the ability to also service adults 18+. Night and weekend work are requirements depending upon library needs.

Essential Duties and Tasks

Provide high quality, energetic, enthusiastic programming, outreach and service desk activities to the Kings Mountain Community.

Services

Plan, promote and implement children's story times and playgroup throughout the year, including an evening program once a month.

Conduct outreach to schools, daycares, assisted living and other community agencies by providing visits and programs.

Lead Summer Adventure committee for various summer programs and activities.

Establish relationships with various schools, preschools, daycares, local organizations and other agency partners.

Keep records, evaluate and report statistics.

Recommend materials for purchase.

Serve as library programs representative to the community and at library workshops and meetings.

Work service desk as needed, keeping current on circulation, reader's advisory and reference functions.

Assist with shelving, straightening, and other library tasks, as needed.

Identify and meet the need of patrons with special needs.

Create an environment that embraces the flexible and changing nature of youth and adult entertainment, technological and informational needs. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the relevant collection of material, especially for children and youth.

Thorough knowledge of the operation of a public library and practices of library science including administration principles and policies, procedures, and practices of the library.

Some knowledge of City personnel, purchasing and budgeting policies and procedures.

Ability to supervise and plan the work of volunteers and staff when needed.

Ability to plan and coordinate successful programs and services relating to children and youth.

Ability to continuously explore and connect with new partnerships and programs throughout the community.

Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.

Knowledge of developmental, recreational and educational needs of children and young adults.

Knowledge of current trends in library services for and with children and young adults.

Knowledge of current information technology, including Windows products, various library and City software, the Internet and database search capabilities and willingness to learn new technologies as they emerge.

Knowledge of effective practices in evaluation and outcomes measurement.

Ability to communicate effectively with others, orally and in writing, including traditional and emerging electronic methods

Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of people including co-workers, patrons, user groups, community organizations, volunteer groups.

Able to recognize and set priorities, and to use initiative and independent judgment in a variety of situations.

Must be able to speak distinctly to large groups.

Must be available to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Facilitate and contribute in a work environment that encourages high performance, collaboration, innovation and customer service, modeling and ensuring excellence in service.

Administer surveys, prepare statistics and reports related to library services, demonstrating successful achievement of library outcomes.

Performs related duties as required.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to drive a car and hold a valid driver's license.

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of sitting, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, reaching, grasping, fingering, talking, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling, hearing, and repetitive motions.

Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; up to 20 pounds of force frequently; and/or must be able to carry up to 20 pounds up two flights of stairs.

Must possess the visual acuity to use a computer and extensive reading for visual inspection of books and materials at distances close to the eyes, and use of measurement devices.

Desirable Training and Experience

Bachelor's degree required; Masters in Library Science preferred. Public library experience in, programming, storytelling and children's services. Or an equivalent combination as demonstrated by several years of prior public library work experience.

Pay Grade: 19

Hiring Range: $20.77-$25.96 depending upon qualifications
