Job Title: Communications Systems Engineer

The Opportunity
Join a cutting-edge engineering team building secure, next-generation communications systems for national defence and intelligence programmes. We are hiring a Communications Systems Engineer with a strong background in Software-Defined Radio (SDR) to design and integrate high-performance communication architectures, protocols, and network topologies.
You’ll work at the intersection of mission systems and advanced digital communications, contributing to projects that shape the UK’s strategic capabilities. The role is fully onsite in Gloucester and offers the flexibility of a 4-day workweek (Fridays off), subject to business requirements.
Key Responsibilities
• Design SDR architectures optimised for scalability, performance, and reliability
• Develop and implement communication interfaces and protocols across platforms
• Model and design network topologies for seamless data exchange and interoperability
• Integrate SDR systems into wider mission solutions alongside cross-functional teams
• Ensure compliance with communication standards (TCP/IP, IEEE 802, mobile networks, FEC)
• Conduct thorough system testing and validation across all communication layers
• Collaborate with RF, software, and payload teams to ensure end-to-end performance
Desired Experience
• Deep knowledge of SDR system architecture and communications technologies
• Proven experience with interface design, protocols, and encoding schemes
• Ability to model network topologies and define link budgets for complex systems
• Familiarity with SDR development tools (e.g. OpenCPI, GnuRadio, Python, C/C++)
• Experience in Linux environments and version control systems (e.g. GitLab)
• Background in Defence, Cyber, or mission-critical communications systems
• Strong analytical mindset with a focus on optimisation and system-level performance
