Utah Municipal Power Agency (UMPA) is a joint action and interlocal agency established in 1980 to serve as an all-requirement energy provider for six member cities: Levan, Manti, Nephi, Provo, Salem, and Spanish Fork. UMPA is governed by a six-member board with representatives from each member city, and it provides comprehensive power supply solutions, including contracts, ownership of generating facilities, transmission management services, forecasting, and scheduling.

Role Description

This is a full-time, on-site, rotating shift role for a Real-Time Scheduler I at Utah Municipal Power Agency located in Spanish Fork, UT. The Real-Time Scheduler I is responsible for performing real-time energy scheduling functions including, but not limited to, energy administration, data management, and coordinating with various stakeholders to ensure efficient and reliable operations. Primary duties include:

Continually forecast hourly and daily energy demand for UMPA member cities.

Analyze real time market conditions, negotiate and purchase the most economical energy source for UMPA customer load.

Economically dispatch and schedule UMPA resources to meet the forecasted energy demand.

Build relationships with other market participants.

Communicate real time market and operational information to the other schedulers and supervisor.

Adhere to the applicable regulatory and Balancing Authority requirements.

Proficiently collects, queries, organizes and manipulates market and operational data, in Excel and accurately presents analytical results.

Prioritize deliverables and manage multiple tasks to meet deadlines.

Provide training and support to new traders regarding UMPA processes and procedures as needed.

Accurately records purchase and sale transactions in UMPA’s deal capture systems.

Remotely operate UMPA’s internal generation to optimize transmission savings, market opportunities, and meet reserve obligations.

Executes gas supply strategy to ensure economical dispatch of UMPA’s natural gas resources.

Reviews daily transactions and schedules to ensure accuracy.

Completes other tasks and assignments as required by supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Associated degree required – Finance or Economics preferred.

Experience:

Minimum one (1) year of applicable experience in the energy industry as a trader, scheduler, or other field requiring monitoring of real time activities.

Experience with power markets and transmission and the use of trading/scheduling software.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Excellent knowledge of the Western Power Market and the Energy Imbalance Market.

Knowledge of power system economics, economic dispatch, energy trading, and scheduling.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Exhibit strong problem solving and analytical ability.

Detail-oriented and self-motivated with the ability to think independently and creatively.

Proficiency with database applications, spreadsheets, and web-based systems.

Ability to work rotating 12-hour shifts.

Ability to work independently.

Ability to perform under stress in a dynamic environment.
