Location: Norfolk, VA

Shift: 6:00 AM – 2:45 PM (with a 45-minute lunch)

Security Clearance: No Clearance Required

Pay Rate: $27.00

Position Overview

Hutco, Inc. is currently seeking two skilled Structural Welders (J4, Aluminum Certified) to join our Steel Shop in Norfolk, Virginia. This role requires a high level of expertise in welding a variety of metals including aluminum, HY-80, HY-100, copper nickel, stainless steel, and carbon steel, using multiple welding processes. Candidates must be familiar with shipyard standards, Navy Standard Item 1689, and the principles of 5S workplace organization.

Key Responsibilities

Journeyperson 4 (J4) - Structural Welder

Weld various base metals including HY-80, HY-100, aluminum, copper nickel, stainless steel, and carbon steel.

Proficiently use welding processes: SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding), GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding), and FCAW (Flux Core Arc Welding).

Select appropriate wire and gas combinations for different materials.

Perform welds that meet Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) quality standards.

Read and interpret weld gauges and weld symbols.

Operate hand tools and set up oxygen and acetylene torches as needed.

Apply knowledge of Navy Standard Item 1689 and follow 5S standards for workplace efficiency and cleanliness.

Work with minimal guidance, requiring only some supervision.

Journeyperson 3 (J3) - Structural Welder

Weld steel, aluminum, copper nickel, and stainless steel materials.

Perform pipe welding using the SMAW process.

Operate oxygen and acetylene torches, read weld gauges, and use hand tools with minimal supervision.

Ensure weld quality suitable for NDT inspections.

Understand and apply Navy Standard Item 1689 and 5S standards.

Skills and Qualifications

Welding Proficiency: Skilled in SMAW, GMAW, and FCAW processes across various metals.

Technical Knowledge: Strong ability to read and interpret weld symbols, blueprints, and weld gauges.

Tools and Equipment: Proficient in the use of hand tools, welding equipment, and gas torch setups.

Standards Compliance: Familiarity with Navy Standard Item 1689 and adherence to 5S workplace organization practices.

Work Quality: Produce welds that meet stringent NDT acceptance standards.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

Frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, kneeling, and climbing aboard ships.

Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights.

Exposure to industrial environments including variable temperatures, humidity, and airborne particulates.

Work Environment

Work performed aboard vessels, in shipyard facilities, and in shop environments.

Frequent use of welding torches, gauges, hand tools, and PPE required.
